First Look

My Reading:

With Captain America and Falcon captured by Cable it’s up to Iron Man to take him down. Leaving the fight against the Lethal Legion to Red Hulk, Iron Man finds Cable but he’s using Tony’s own armor tech against him. Tony overrides the armor but that’s exactly what Cable wanted – Stark is incapacitated by the trap Cable set. The mutant from the future starts preparing to take on the next Avenger but Red Hulk attacks first. While it seems like Cable’s plan has been working to get the team one-by-one, Hulk has messed up his plans. Is this the end of Cable’s vendetta against the Avengers?

As Cable was fighting Iron Man, though, we get some good flashbacks/flashforwards about his daughter, Hope, and the techno-organic virus. Apparently Cable needs to constantly keep his telekinetic abilities going to keep the virus at bay. If he lets his guard down the virus advances. And he’s been dealing with this his entire life – his parents even had to send him into the future so he could survive with the disease.

What did I learn:

• Even with all the information and gadgets Cable has from the future he can’t know everything that can happen as Red Hulk has interrupted his assault.
• Cable’s last name is Summers and he’s supposed to be dead.
• Cable thinks he’s met Red Hulk before but he’s not the Talbot Cable thinks he is.
• Apparently there are different Red Hulks over the years.

My Thoughts:

I took a First Look at this comic a bit ago and I still feel it’s pretty good based on a second reading. The backstory for Cable’s daughter and the techno-organic virus Cable’s got is a pretty good way to learn about the character but it takes a bit of getting used to watching all the time jumps. This story still works though. Things are a bit strange though with the Marvel Now! Point One issue, which I think is supposed to happen prior to this one, that has Cable in it as well, but I figure that’s something I’ll have to deal with when reading issues that are not necessarily related with the same character…oh well I want to see where this goes.

Cable seems to have had a good plan and he got half the Avengers trapped but Hulk was the wildcard. With Cable thinking he was this Talbot guy, he miscalculated and his plan is in trouble.

The art is pretty good and I really like the rendering of Red Hulk. The time slice faded coloring is pretty cool too but I’m wondering what’s gonna happen in the next issue to make this a 4 issue limited series.
