The Extinction Machines, Part Three
Things seemed to be pretty bad in the last issue, but to my view, they seem to be a bit less urgent in this latest installment. At least, it almost seems as though three different attacks are going on, and I’m not sure if all 3 of the attacking groups are on the same side. I’m kinda getting the feeling that perhaps the Justice League and the humans are caught between a couple of warring factions…at least the people seem to be pawns for the Kindred.
These giant beings seem to be comprised of people and are looking to stop something called the Purge from what I can tell. And I’m not sure if the Purge is the alien invaders that landed in Gotham or the balls of energy buried in the Earth’s core, but any of these three factions seem to be more than a match for the League, even with Superman.
The team did get the Man of Steel in this issue, and while the Lanterns, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Cyborg try to stop the Kindred, Clark is headed into the planet to figure out what to do with the extinction machines in the core.
There’s a lot of action in this issue and some lovey-dovey between Lois and Clark, but it’s pretty sparse on character development. I typically like to see more story in my comics than just barely enough to explain why all the fighting is happening, and I’m not even sure this issue does that much very well.
Verdict
This issue is a bit of a step down from the first, but I’m hoping the introduction of Superman into the picture and the questions about how he’ll fit into the team will make this series worth reading. While I like all the action, I want some story and characterization with my heroes.
I rate this issue a Skip and am hoping the next installment turns things around.
My recommendation of the first issue of this series can be found here and this comic can be found on Comixology, on DC Universe, or at your local comic book shop.
