Ramble for July 24, 2022

The last day of Comic-Con was always an odd one. I feel happy for another year of attendance and sad it’s over. I’m also typically pretty exhausted because of all the craziness.

This year, watching events unfold at home again, I am somewhat saddened that I did not get down to the panels or wander the exhibit hall, but I’m also glad that I am focused on ensuring that I avoid COVID for another year. I also didn’t have to deal with the lines and all the crowds. Hopefully, things will be resolved with this pandemic by next year’s Con.

In any case, the final day of Comic-con has plenty of interesting panels to see, and I was particularly interested in the Babylon 5 panel. This was set up initially, I believe, to be focused on the reboot that is supposed to be coming, but that was moved from the Fall of this year to 2023. Instead of the reboot, this panel was more focused on being a celebration of the show, looking back at the groundbreaking innovations and storytelling that made this such a fun show to watch.

In Hall H, while the Mayans M. C. Was the first panel of the day, I was more interested in the What We Do In The Shadows panel. That show is so much fun. It’s the Spiritual Successor of Flight of the Concords without the musical features, but I love the group of out-of-time vampires. Nandor, Laszlo, Nadia, Guillermo, and Colin Robinson were all in attendance at the panel, and I was glad to see insights into what we can expect for the rest of season 4.

There was also a 40th-anniversary panel for Blade Runner. It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years since this is such a classic piece of science fiction. A few years ago, I went to the panel for the movie 2021 A Space Odyssey, and it was great seeing members of the cast and people influenced by the show, and I expect that‘s what was presented in this panel. 40 years of replicants’ search for their creators, 40 years of their quest to extend their lives, while the movie may not be a perfect adaptation of the book, it certainly has created a fandom and made Philip K. Dick a must-know author for any geek.

Of course, last but not least, there was the annual Once More With Feeling Buffy rewatch. This is always a great way to end the Con as it brings to gather fond memories and wraps up another year of Comic-Con fun.

Hopefully, next year, the COVID thing will be behind us, and I’ll be able to actually attend the convention, but I’m glad I was able to keep tabs on things, touch base with friends at the Con, and follow along online for San Diego Comic-Con 2022.
