Ramble for July 21, 2022
Ok, so while yesterday was Preview Night at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, today is the first full day, and there are tons of panels and events going on today that look pretty cool. While I am sticking to my plan of ‘not attending,’ I am paying attention to what’s going on and trying to keep an eye on topics that interest me. So, here are a few of the highlights as I see them…
The Wheel of Time: Origins and third season announcement, the Severance panel, and of course, William Shatner.
The Wheel of Time
How did I miss this show? I avidly watched the first season of The Wheel of Time show, and somehow I never heard that there was a backup animated show that added flavor to things. Apparently, these short animated videos started being released around the same time as the episodes but were listed as the ‘X-Ray’ portion of the Prime show. I guess I’m gonna have to pay more attention to all the options when I watch a show from Amazon. The showrunners are releasing new Origins episodes even before the second season airs, but the big announcement at the panel on Thursday was that the show was picked up for a 3rd season.
Severance
This show came out of nowhere for me and had a great first season. They were picked up for a second season in April, so there was nothing new on that front, but I’m sure it was good to see the creatives chat about their show.
Who would have thought that placing The Office in a sci-fi setting would be so entertaining? I think the show does a great job of formulating mystery and suspicion in an eerie way that draws in audiences even with the depressing and quirky lives that the severed workers enjoy.
I’m definitely on board to figure out the secrets of the show and am glad it has another season and was well received at the convention.
Shatner on Shatner
This has to be the highlight of Thursday’s panels. William Shatner is in the house, and he’s talking about the documentary that’s getting produced about his career and life. He spoke about the Strange New Worlds Kirk, and I loved that he spoke about his actual time as an astronaut. At 91 years old, he’s really done quite a bit and embedded himself in the culture.
As for the documentary, I look forward to it. I enjoy watching him on all the shows he’s been on, and The UnXplained is so much fun. He’s such an icon, and if anything had gotten me to risk heading to Comic-Con this year, it would have been to see this panel.
