Another Milestone for Star Wars
It’s hard to believe that Star Wars turns 45 today.
The Rundown
First off, here are a few things of interest for today…
- Syndergaard Gets Revenge
Noah Syndergaard took his revenge on Texas through 8 innings last night and only gave up 1 run on 4 hits. He was certainly firing on all cylinders, and it was a joy to watch.
- Guild Wars 2 is struggling
In a surprise turn of events, Guild Wars 2 is having a ton of difficulties battling Legends of Aria in my Rambling Redshirt’s Gaming Madness tournament. The RNG gods are really treating this MMO poorly with a 1 on Monday, and yesterday they barely got out of single digits with a 10. At the half, they are losing 48 to 41 and are looking at possibly getting booted out of the tournament in the first round. That would certainly be an upset! We’ll see if they can start their comeback in the 3rd quarter later today.
- Duplicator troubles
A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned how I was going to set up a staging site for this blog so that I could try out some updates and see how things would work with the new Full Site Block Editing that WordPress has been promoting in their recent releases. With that in mind, I set up Local as a WordPress installation on my Mac Mini and started working on getting this site backed up and copied over. Most sites I found that went through this process talked about using plugins to perform the backup and migration, so I thought I’d try one of them out. Little did I know that since I’ve been blogging for so many years and have so many posts, I can’t use the simple free version of many of the plugins. Duplicator, in particular, had issues with my site because of the size and number of images and posts. I tried and tried and followed recommendation after recommendation, but Duplicator was a no-go. I suppose I’ll move on to the next plugin, or maybe I’ll try the backup manually… we’ll see this weekend.
The Goods
Happy Anniversary, Star Wars!
45 years ago today, Star Wars premiered at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, and the rest has been history. With 9 movies in the main story and another 3 closely related, this is an epic franchise. There are plenty of TV shows as well, including the upcoming Obi-Wan show on Disney+. Live-action or animated, comic book or novel, the Skywalker Saga and all of its spinoffs from a galaxy far, far away are part of our culture whether we like it or not.
45 years and we’ve seen Star Wars become part of society – everyone knows about Luke, Leia, and Han, and who could ever forget Darth Vader? Lately, people have gone crazy about the Mandalorian and melted when looking in the glossy eyes of Grogu. Certainly, people remember the humans, but I still think R2D2 and C3PO are the real heroes of the story.
I remember lining up as a kid to see this glorious space epic. And then I saw it again, and again, and again. Back in the day, there was no streaming, there were no DVDs or VHS recordings of shows. There were a handful of TV stations, so there was no chance the movie would show up on TV or cable any year soon. So, I think I must have seen the original movie IN THE THEATER 50 times.
I had it memorized!
Anyway, it’s 45 years later, and the story is still all over the place. Star Trek and Marvel may come close to cultural relevance, but just as everyone knows to Live Long and Prosper, they also exclaim – May the Force Be With You!
Happy Anniversary, Star Wars!
It’s a Wrap
Yesterday was an interesting day with highs like the Angels win and Star Wars’ anniversary and lows like my issues with Duplicator. I suppose even more interesting was the surprise that Guild Wars 2 is losing to an indie game in my tournament.
In any case, I’m looking forward to making the rest of today a good one, and I hope you all have a great day.
