First Quarter Math Stuff
To get things rolling with my Rambling Redshirt’s Gaming Madness tournament, I need to go over a few things and put together some first-quarter math stuff. In particular, I want to give a bit of structure to how I am going to work out who wins each matchup and how the points for each quarter are determined. By laying things out for the first quarter, I think it will set a foundation for each contest and for the entire tournament.
The Rundown
First off, a few things of interest for today…
- Candy
This story of a woman who killed a neighbor and ‘friend’ with an ax sounded intriguing, so I’ve been watching it. Yesterday we finally got to the point, in episode 4 of 5, where the people of the town are starting to suspect that Candy may have been involved with the murder. With one episode left, I am looking forward to seeing how the court case unfolds.
- Fellowship
It’s been a few years, so I decided to rewatch the Lord of the Rings movies in preparation for the upcoming TV show on Amazon. This past weekend was the kickoff, and I watched The Fellowship of the Rings over the course of 2 days. I decided to go with the extended version but breaking it up across the whole weekend made it easier to get the show in. And I have to say that while I knew the story and had seen the movie a few times before, this is still a good movie.
- Ohtani hits 101
The Angels managed to pull off a series win against the A’s this weekend, and it was nice to see the team perform so well against an arch-rival. The A’s always seem to beat up on my Angels but this year looks to be different. Hopefully, they can keep things up as they head to Texas on Monday. Shohei at least is starting to get hot as he just hit his 8th home run of the year and number 101 in his career. Let’s keep the team hot and in first place.
- Reading Thor: Son of Asgard
I’m jumping back into my reading of Marvel Comics, and once again, I’m starting in the early days. This time around, though, I am looking at the chronology presented by ComicbookReadingOrders.com and read Thor: Son of Asgard #1. It was pretty good and since I have read it before was not something that surprised me.
The Goods
I was going to take a look at the pregame warmup for my wild card match here, but instead, I think it might be good to give a bit of an insight into the math I am going to look at for the first quarter of the contest…
First Quarter Math Stuff
Ok…Forza Horizon 5 versus Divinity Original Sin 2 is the first battle I am running for my Rambling Redshirt’s Gaming Madness tournament, so I’ll try to lay out my general idea for how the contest results will be determined.
I am going to break each of the matches into 4 quarters and base the scoring on a 25-point starting scale. The idea is to give each contestant 25 points to begin the day with, and then, based on the quarter, I’ll provide a random factor that will move the score up or down. The factor for the first quarter is going to be based on the Metacritic score of the combatants.
Based on the Metacritic score, I will generate a random number from 1 to whatever the score is. If the result is above 50, I will award positive points, and below 50, I will subtract points. 50 will then be subtracted from the random value and the result will be divided by 10 to give the positive or negative value to add to the 25 base points.
Based on this, a combatant can score between 20 and 30 points in this quarter. Games with a high Metacritic score will have a better chance of scoring above 25 points, while those that have a score above 90 will get the opportunity to max out at 30 points for the quarter.
As there are 4 quarters, and each one will start with 25 points as a baseline, each team will have to opportunity to score 100 points total. With Metacritic being the first test, I’m also looking at relative number of Twitch streamers, the Dev activity and population base of the games, the accessibility of support from fellow gamers (are there blogs dedicated to the game, or are the forums filled with useful information). Anyway, it will be somewhat subjective, but I hope to make things as reasonable as possible. Coupling these parameters with the random factor, and I think this, will make for some interesting results.
We’ll see…
It’s a Wrap
As I wind down my rambling today, I wanted to reiterate that I will take into consideration any comments people provide regarding the games that are competing in the tournament. I figure to include comments in the fourth quarter, so if people are pushing for one game over the other, there’s a chance for a spectacular finish to the contest.
In any case, my first quarter for the Forza Horizon 5 versus Divinity Original Sin 2 wild card matchup will be coming later today, so hopefully, my explanation here, along with the actual results of the quarter, will help everyone understand what I am looking at doing.
