First Results of Round 2 of the 2022 March Mammal Madness
Today we get to see the first set of contests in the 2022 March Mammal Madness Round 2. The Queens of the Sea & Sky face off against each other followed by the Why Not Both? division battles. Things look pretty intense in both divisions as we had some interesting upsets in the first round.
For the Queens of the Sea & Sky, I made a correct underdog pick with my selection of the 10th seed Indian Fruit Bat. This guy beat up on the Arctic Tern and advanced to Round 2 but here, he’s gonna face a difficult #2 seed, the Hawaiian Monk Seal and I predict the bat’s tournament will end here. I also made a couple of poor underdog picks with the Olive Sea Snake advancing along with the Eclectus Parrot. These guys face significant challenges in this round so we’ll see if they get taken out (only a round later than I predicted).
For the Why Not Both division, I pretty much picked the top seed from each of the battles and ended up pretty well off. The only trouble I had was the Echidna refused to give up and the Spotted Salamander held strong against the Lungfish. I’m pretty sure these guys will get knocked out in the second round today as I don’t expect the salamander to have the strength to survive against the Therapsid and I feel Rory that the Echidna has to face the Walrus.
In any case, let’s see how things went…
As can be seen, the higher seeds won each of the matches except for the Map Turtle vs Blanket Octopus contest. Orca, Sea Eagle, and Monk Seal all advance to the Sweet 16 with the Turtle. And the Turtle won by the typical Fan Interference. One of these years the contests will be held where outsiders can not mess with the combatants. In this case, an illegally fishing human (of all things) snagged the Octopus on a fishing line and allowed the Turtle to make his victory lap before heading to the Sweet 16. I’m kinda happy the turtle won even though is messes with my bracket picks.
In the Why Not Both? division we get a straight forward set of contests. Each of the higher seeds knocked off their opponents with most of the losers getting squished by the victors. Walrus and Therapsid squashed their opponents since they were significantly larger than the losers. The Pangolin found a tasty treat (terminates) in the arena and hunkered down while the Serval carried it’s meal out of the contest area. The Swordfish sliced and diced the Frogfish, and with the Sweet 16 all that’s left we have the following victors: Walrus, Swordfish, Pangolin, and Therapsid. Not a bad group to send as representatives.
The rest of Round 2 will commence in a few days.
