Poisons and Zombies
Today things get rolling in both Dune and Secret World Legends. In Dune, we see the start of the Harkonnen assault against the Atreides, and things are not looking good for the Duke and Paul. And while that is going on, Chicken Noodle finally gets to perform on some actual missions as she heads into Kingsmouth Town and learns of the zombie infestation.
A Walk Down the Zombie Road
Finally…Noodle has made it to Kingsmouth Town and the start of her grand adventure In Secret World Legends. The main story quest for the area is called the Dawning of an Endless Night, and from previous experience, it goes on and on for quite a number of game sessions and tiers. Actually, I think it runs characters throughout the entire Solomon Island area and really sets the tone of the game.
And it all starts in Kingsmouth Town, with Jack Boone and a bunch of Zombies.
Ok, so I mentioned before how SWL happens to have “kill 10 rats” type of quests; well, the first Action mission in Kingsmouth, “For a Fistfull of Zombies,” is pretty much one of these. Like I also said previously, SWL handles these types of quests with extra flavor. In particular, after you kill the first set of zombies, you are tasked with variations on that theme – first, you lure zombies out by setting off car alarms, then you ignite gas cans and pull the zombies into the fire, then you kill specific zombies who are eating people. It’s all a play on the “kill 10 rats,” but at least there is variation.
And all these steps take a few minutes at most and are guiding you along the road to where the quest turn-in is…the Sheriff’s Station.
I think it works well and demonstrates a logical and well-thought-out design for the mission system. And in any case, Noodle quickly jumps through these hoops and makes it to the zombie-free zone without any trouble.
The Die is Cast
Things are in motion that can not be stopped now. Leto finds the smuggler from dinner dead in a hallway, and a dying Mapes warns of Dr. Yueh, but things have progressed too far. It is too late for the Duke. As he tries to figure out what is happening, he is struck with a poison dart, and the end is near.
A drugged Leto learns that Yueh wants to kill the Baron Harkonnen, and the only way he will be able to accomplish that is if the Duke dies as well. He places a fake tooth in Leto’s mouth that will release poison gas when the Duke bites down. In return for Leto’s assistance in killing the Baron, Yueh promises to save Jessica and Paul – we’ll see how that goes…
Everything so far has been building up to this event which clearly makes chapter 18 a Must Read.
