Saturday at ComicCon@Home

So far, ComicCon@Home has been great. I haven’t had to deal with any lines or running between rooms. I haven’t had to struggle through the exhibit hall to get to the souvenir I wanted. And the best thing has been that the videos of the panels are available to be rewatched at anytime so far. I certainly hope they keep them posted after the con.

I Con’t Believe It’s Been So Long

The 15th Anniversary Reunion panel for Constantine was enjoyable but there were no ground breaking revelations. Sadly, there are no current plans for a sequel even though there were plenty of discussions about a second movie early after the first came out. I suppose it was not as well received as the studio wanted and even though it has remained a cult favorite, the fact that it focuses on religion might be a hinderance.

One cool aspect of the panel was learning of the insistence by Keanu that the movie be made on location in Los Angeles. It really allowed the city to become a part of the movie and influenced the writer and director as well. They worked up an entire geography for Hell so as to mirror current society – there was a Hell version of L.A., a Hell version of Illinois, etc. (Some may say that L.A. is already Hell, but that’s another topic).

While Keanu was not familiar with the DC Comics character when he started the movie he did learn of the blond hair and British nationality but it was never considered to ask him to wear a wig or speak in anything other than American English.

On the whole, the panel was pretty good. I enjoyed seeing Keanu talk about his time making the film and while I am sad they never made a sequel, I am glad they were able to get the original movie made so well.

Best Comedy on TV

Thoughts on the What We Do In The Shadows panel

What We Do In The Shadows is currently one of my favorite shows on TV. It is a hilarious ‘Office-style’ mockumentary on FX about 4 vampires living in a house in Staten Island, and it is a ton of fun.

All 4 of the vampires were on the panel along with their familiar – Guillermo, and a couple of producers. And the moderator was Haley Joel Osment who was actually featured in one of the episodes last season.

The panel was great and I actually felt weird watching Mark Proksch who plays Colin on the show since I am pretty sure Energy Vampires can drain you through the internet.

The highlight of the panel was the description of the pool cue ‘lightsaber’ battle and how Matt Berry, who plays Laszlo, was transported back to his 7-year old self as he faced off against Luke Skywalker.

There was also a bit that I’m not sure was planned, but seemed entirely appropriate, as Kayvan Novak who plays the 758-year old technologically-challenged vampire, Nandor seemed to be unable to maintain connectivity to the panel.

In all it was a great panel and I am pleased to learn that the show has been picked up for a third season.

It’s a Wrap

I’m so glad to see What We Do In The Shadows has been picked up for another season. Sure, we may not have any idea when it will be filmed since you can’t really have vampires worrying about catching COVID, but I am glad to see the network appreciates the show. I hope they keep things going for many more years.

As for Constantine, I’m saddened that they are not putting together a sequel. That was actually one of the hopes I had going into the panel but even without any news like that, I enjoyed the panel.

One thing I will say about ComicCon@Home that is similar to the regular yearly Comic-Con is that while it is going on, I am swamped. I am so busy trying to see the different panels or do all the things that I have little time to sit and think. And even less time to throw together posts. Hopefully though, I’ll be able to put together more thoughts after the con and since the videos will still be posted I’ll be able to rewatch the ones I like too.
