Some More Eisner Nominees
Today, I throw out another couple of categories of Eisner Award nominees. These pretty much round out the main features that I usually attend to. While there are awards for the Writers, artists, colorists, and letterers, I like to look at a comics as a whole entity. I’m not expert enough to be able to make much of a judgement of who letters better than others or how one colorists is better than another, so I usually stick to the comic series categories.
Best New Series
For the Best new Series, I find that I’ve actually read an issue or two of 4 out of the 5 nominees and the one I’m surprised I haven;t read is Doctor Doom.
Here are the titles:
- Doctor Doom
by Christopher Cantwell and Salvador Larocca (Marvel) - Invisible Kingdom
by G. Willow Wilson and Christian Ward (Berger Books/Dark Horse) - Once & Future
by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora (BOOM! Studios) - Something Is Killing the Children
by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera (BOOM! Studios) - Undiscovered Country
by Scott Snyder, Charles Soule, Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Daniele Orlandini (Image)
My personal favorite is Once & Future and I’ve actually read the entire first arc of that series. I love the art, the story, and characters. And Actually, all four of the series I’ve touched on have been very good and I can see the reason why they are nominated for the Eisner Award.
I hope Once & Future wins though.
Best Limited Series
I’ve also read through a bunch issues in this category as well.
- Ascender
by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen (Image) - Ghost Tree
by Bobby Curnow and Simon Gane (IDW) - Little Bird
by Darcy Van Poelgeest and Ian Bertram (Image) - Naomi
by Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker, and Jamal Campbell (DC) - Sentient
by Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Walta (TKO)
Though I’ve read issues from 3 of the 5 nominees, I find myself leaning towards Little Bird. That was a good series that I really enjoyed. The two Lemire series are the ones I haven’t read but Lemire is definitely growing on me. I’ve really enjoyed reading his Black Hammer and Descender so I can see that he would have a couple of new series in the Eisner nominee list.
It’s a Wrap
While there are a bunch of other categories, I think I’ll stick with the three that I’ve covered. Sure, I’ve read some of the issues that writers or artists have been nominated for but for me the art and writing is so different between comics – even if the writer or artist is the same. And don’t get me started about graphic albums – I have no idea what those are, but they get a couple of Eisner categories as well.
