Muddling Around with the Queen’s Succession Game, Turns 221 to 230
I’m not really sure how things went during my latest tenure at the helm of the Great British Empire. While we were able to advance on multiple fronts of research and study, I am not sure the nation made the strides it could have under a more aggressive leader.
Diplomacy proved a particularly sticky issue as we had a couple of incidents where foreign leaders felt it necessary to denounce us. While it’s clear they were doing so because they felt inferior, we still took notice and will remember these insults.
Early on, almost as soon as we took the reigns of the country, Gilgamesh claimed we broke some kind of promise to him. Clearly he was mistaken but he made his announcement publicly and we will need to take care of him soon. His later deployment of a settler and then establishment of the city near the middle of our great nation can not go unanswered. We need to crush this fool!
Unfortunately I did not have the time nor the firepower in the area to teach him a lesson but he will have to dealt with soon.
The other major development on the diplomatic front was another denouncement. Pedro II decided to poke us because we have more great people than he does. I’m sure he’s not looking for a fight but I wonder if his denouncement was in support of the Sumerian aggression. Whatever the reason, I didn’t give it much thought.
With diplomacy out of the way, let’s turn towards a friendlier nation…Egypt. Cleopatra has been pretty close to us since the game began but I am growing concerned – or rather I am pissed off where she placed her latest city.
While I was working on keeping Gilgamesh under control, Cleo planted a city right near where I was targeting. So rude. Beyond that, she also had the balls to take over the Toronto city-state. We were Suzerain and were getting lots of bonuses from the city until she took it over.
So as you can see, I kinda feel like I failed at my reign. Friends were doing stuff I’d rather them not, and soon to be enemies were pushing us around like they were superior to the might of the British Empire.
Of course, these are all things future leaders will have to deal with since I am passing on control of our great nation.
Other minor but none-the-less important developments during our reign included the discovery of the Yerevan city-state and our immediate sending of envoys to become friends. We discovered Humanism, another City-State of Bandar Brunei, and researched Economics. We circumnavigated the world and did quite a bit of exploration, but I still feel like we could have done better.
I suppose the biggest surprise was finding that the barbarians down by Sheffield have muskets. I’m not sure who gave them that technology but we’re gonna have to deal with their outposts soon. Fortunately, we had some guns laying around waiting for the next unit to be recruited so we were able to arm some swordsmen with muskets to defend the city.
Once again though, those southern barbarians are something for future leaders to contend with.
As things stand, we are the number one nation in the world and I’m pretty sure we’ll remain that if and when my opportunity to lead comes around again.
For now, I hand off the nation to Kanter and wish you lots of luck. You can find the save file here.
Well with friends like those… Hah.
We’ll handle them all eventually. Undecided whether Gilgamesh or Pablo should be the first target though. Pablo has been the more meddlesome of the two to date, but I do feel Gilgamesh has become a little uppity with how close their borders push on ours.
