Five Favored Game Series

There’s been a blog post theme going around the past few days about favorite game series and I thought I’d take a brief look at it but then I realized I’m not so sure I have five series that I follow all that closely. Off the top of my head I can’t think of five but let’s see how it goes…

Sid Meier’s Civilization

I suppose the series I’ve spent the most time in has been Sid Meier’s Civilization series of games. I started playing back when Civ II came out and pretty much haven’t looked back since. These games have given me so much enjoyment over the years and while I haven’t loved every feature they’ve added, most of the new stuff has turned out pretty good.

Starfleet Command

Another game series I enjoyed goes way back. Starfleet Command was a group of games based in the Star Trek Universe. You got to fly around in the Enterprise or a Klingon Bird of Prey and shoot each other in some fairly large fleet battles. Unfortunately, this game series kinda dried up before the internet boom took off or at least in the early years. Sure, there were mutliplayer components but there was never full scale, imersive, persistent, multiplayer experience. I suppose the closest you could get is in Star Trek Online where the spaceship battles are a fairly close approximation of what the combat was like…there were just tons of different races and fleets to choose from.

The Settlers

Also going into the way-back-machine is where I found The Settlers. This follows along with the theme from Civilization where you build up a nation, but it also ties in some real-time strategy from titles like Command & Conquer and Age of Empires. Apparently though, in looking things up for this post, I found out there’s supposed to be a new version released this year for the game series.

Warcraft

And…while I know people were questioning if MMOs and their expansions count for game series, I think I can safely place Warcraft and World of Warcraft into the same series of games and say that I’ve taken much enjoyment from these games. I know sometimes there’s a love/hate relationship with these games and their developer (right now I am considering ending my boycott of Blizzard for their abuse of Free Speech) but I’ve played and enjoyed these games for decades.

Diablo

Finally, the last series I would throw out there is from the same game studio, and that’s Diablo. I may not play much of the current version right now but I have over the years put quite a few hours into this series. I still think Diablo 2 is my favorite but 3 is pretty close behind – particularly with all the updates they’ve thrown at it.

It’s a Wrap

So I guess I was able to come up with five games series I would consider my favorites after all. I could easily have added Borderlands or Bioshock and I think Mass Efect or Halo could have ended up on the list if I really thought about them sooner.

On the whole, I enjoyed the exercise in looking back at my favorite games and applaud those who took the time to come up with the post concept.
