Invincible Angel
One thing I enjoy doing, particularly during a blogging event is to highlight content from the blogs that are near me in the Blogosphere. I call this type of post a Six Degrees post since it loosely follows the Six Degrees of Separation/Kevin Bacon concept. With that in mind, today, in addition to my look at Invincible issue 2, I wander over to JVT Workshop to peep at what he has to say about Alita: Battle Angel.
Family, School, and Origin
Invincible #2
Somehow I missed this issue the first time around, but it is definitely worth a read as it provides some good background information about Mark and his family. We also get to see what our hero does when he can’t sleep (hint, it involves flying around looking for bad guys while in his PJs).
On the whole, this is an excellent all-around issue that touches on family life, school, and a new superhero team Mark runs into.
I really like the way Kirkman presents Invincible’s origin and how it’s based on his family rather than some external force, and I’m enjoying the understated manner in which Mark is ‘falling into’ his superhero role.
Six Degrees of Alita
Joseph Skyrim, over at the JVT Workshop, posted a nice review of Alita: Battle Angel and gave the movie 4 outta 5 stars. Go check out his review here, but I’d like to add my voice to his in suggesting that this is a pretty good movie.
I’ve mentioned the movie before and have read some of the manga – actually, I would like to finish off the first volume and beyond – so I’ll leave the description of the film to Joseph, but it’s nice to see that others appreciate the movie as I did.
I’m not sure if we’re gonna get a sequel, but according to Box Office Mojo, Alita cost $170 million to make and earned $404 million worldwide. Those are decent numbers for a new Sci-Fi series, but I haven’t heard anything about if it’ll get a second installment, though there is plenty of material to pull from.
It’s a Wrap
Alita and Invincible…two kick ass heroes that we get to learn a bit about today. Both the movie and the comic do a pretty good introduction to the main characters, and we get origin stories that, in my mind, fit in nicely with the plot.
For Invincible, I know there are another 125+ issues that follow this one, and with Alita, there are numerous manga volumes, but I certainly hope there’s gonna be another movie or two. Either way, I enjoyed them both, and I thank Joseph Skyrim over at JTV Workshop for reminding me about how much fun Alita: Battle Angel was.
