The Cost

This issue really brings life to one of the premier characters of the prequels. Count Dooku was always a mystery to me, but Jody Houser puts together a story that helps the reader understand his motivations, and I would love to read more about his preparations for the coming of the Sith.

I never really bought the idea that Dooku was a Sith operative. After Darth Maul was killed (or at least cut in half), I was a bit confused how Palpatine drafted a new apprentice so quickly. From this story, it seems that Dooku was already working for Darth Sideous since the plans he set in motion on Sullust were developing for quite a while, and the Count’s displeasure with the Jedi was entrenched for quite some time.

One thing that always struck me as a bit troublesome in the Star Wars universe was the idea that you were either Jedi or Sith, there wasn’t a place for users of the Force outside those two factions. Dooku’s switch from Jedi to Sith was a bit more surprising than Anakin’s, primarily because we did not see how Palpatine manipulated the Count, but this issue makes it clear that he had similar thoughts about the Jedi’s failures to solve all the problems in the Republic.
And Dooku’s cold-blooded killing of Jak’Zin clearly drives home the fact that he’s truly gone over to the Dark Side.

In all, I enjoyed this issue. The characters are well laid out, and the story makes me look forward to the rest of the Age of Republic series…I hope it is just as good.
