The Beginner’s Guide to Surrender

I really enjoyed the first issue of this series and even though Cobra took over the United States, a key Joe was taken down, and Cobra tanks drove across the White House lawn, I was on board for the series. After this issue, I’m not so sure though.

The death of Duke has sent shockwaves through the remaining Joes with Scarlett taking things particularly hard. But life must go on and that means training.

The new recruits, who were just normal people before Cobra won, need to learn how to operate with the rest of the team. And Tiger in particular feels outta place since he doesn’t think he did much to earn his invitation to the Joes.

This issue seems to be take step back from the intensity I felt while reading the first issue. Sure, there are some significant emotions discussed and it seems the portrayal of the Joes reflect real people more than comic book characters, but I felt something was missing. Maybe it was the lack of action or the fact the story was about the ‘downtime’ a military unit encounters, but the issue was not what I was expecting after the dramatic opening installment.

The last few pages seem to hint at some interesting developments coming in future issues but I can only hope the series gets back to the fun I had reading the last issue.

Verdict

Verdict - Skip

I’m sad to say I really didn’t like this issue and can only hope things get better as I rate it a Skip. Check out the first issue – my recommendation is here – if you want a good read.
