Rebirth of a Classic

Ramble #27: Rebirth of a Classic

Giant-Size X-Men #1

Second Genesis

By Len Wein, Dave Cockrum, Glynis Wein, and John Costanaza.

Published by Marvel Comics, 1975.

This issue resurrects the X-Men team and actually brings forward a new team that rejuvenates the title. I’ve only read a few of the earlier X-Men issues but I thought it was pretty cool to begin with but I guess it was having a difficult time selling back in the early 70s. This issue reboots the team as we see Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Banshee, Thunderbird, Storm, and Sunfire, join the team. Of the originals, Cyclops sticks around as the leader but Angel, Havok, Marvel Girl, and Iceman leave the team at the end of the story. Beyond the historical and real world significance, I think this is a pretty good story where we see Krakoa for the first time, who becomes so important to current 2019 mutants, as a villain who captures the original team of X-Men.

My Recommendation: A Must Read for anyone interested in X-Men continuity.
