Preparation and Goodbyes

Ramble #12: Preparation and Goodbyes

Today is gonna be a day where I get things ready for my 5+1 gaming challenge. As part of that preparation, I’m trying to make sure I have all the games installed and updated to their latest patches, expansions, and such. I actually realized that I have The Witcher 3 on both PC and PS4 and I have Civilization 6 on PC and iPad. This gives me a bit of variety if I don’t want to play everything on my laptop. Oh yeah, and I’ve heard Civ VI is coming to PS4 and XBox soon.

In addition to making sure I have all my games ready to go for when my 12 weeks start tomorrow, I’m also saying goodbye to some games I’ve been playing recently, namely…League of Legends. I’m actually glad to be putting this game aside because I feel it takes up way too much of my gaming attention and it doesn’t provide the payoff I get from a good MMO or RPG. League seems to always suck me in and frustrate the hell outta me because I am reliant on other players for ranked advancement. It really can be a frustrating game and I’d say now is a good time to push it aside. I’m glad I can step away from the trolls, away from the constant rule changes, and away from the maddening matchmaking system League of Legends has. I’m sure I’ll take a look back at the game after these 12 weeks are up but for now, good riddance.

Another game I’m setting aside is one I pretty much put away a few weeks ago. I’ve been on a hiatus from World of Warcraft since shortly after their Classic server went live because of the whole Hong Kong Freedom issue. I really do not want to support a company that punishes free speech and I am pissed at Blizzard for their initial – gut reaction – stance. If the first thing they think of when confronted with a situation like this was to ban and punish the player then that is what their corporate culture is. Sure they took a more mature and reasonable stance after they thought about it for a few days but their initial reaction was to punish someone for speaking their mind. That’s wrong in my book even if the guidelines of the event indicated that free speech was not allowed. Anyway, I’ll probably revisit WoW in the future but for now…good riddance.

Other games also are gonna sit on the sidelines for the next few months but I’m ok with that. The Elder Scrolls Online is always a game I spend a few hours in a month at least, and I was just getting back into Destiny 2 but I think the hiatus will just make them all the more appreciated when I come back to visit. SMITE will still be there after my 12 weeks (I hope) and while I was just getting into Borderlands 3, I can let them work out any bugs while it’s on my shelf and I can come back to a trouble-free game…right?

On the whole, I’m looking forward to this challenge and to getting started tomorrow.
