The Rook Chapter 12 – Psychics

I’m really enjoying these little notes that Thomas left Myfanwy and this chapter is another one. In chapter 12 we gain insight into how Thomas learned that she was gonna lose her memories. It’s been over 10 chapters and multiple notes from her previous self but we’re finally gonna learn what made Thomas start preparing for her memory loss.

Inchoate Thoughts

Summing up where things are…our hero was attacked. Myfanwy Thomas was a top officer of a government organization, called the Checquy, that specializes in protecting the British Isles from supernatural attack but someone assaulted her and wiped out all her memories. Fortunately she knew beforehand that this was gonna happen so she laid out a plan to help her future, mind wiped self survive and find out who caused this to happen to her.

11 chapters into the story and she isn’t much closer to figuring out who did it. In this chapter we get some insight into how Thomas knew she was gonna be attacked and how she provided the notes to Myfanwy that helped her get through these few days since she lost her memory.

The clock is ticking though as her boss, Lady Linda Farrier knows the reality of the attack and has sworn secrecy but others might be figuring out that something isn’t the same about Myfanwy. I mean these are spy’s who work closely with her on a weekly basis – you think they’ll figure out something is up soon. And to top it off, the country is facing an imminent invasion by a bunch of Belgian mutants.

Before we can get back to figuring out who did this to our hero we have to go back to the time before the memory wipe to see how she knew to leave messages to her future self.

Homeless Psychic

I suppose if I was working for a supernatural government agency I might take the words of a homeless person who predicts memory loss a bit more seriously than I would in my current life. I mean, I’ve heard plenty of ramblings from homeless people living here in San Diego, where the weather is accommodating to outdoor living, but I don’t think I’ve ever acted on them. Except maybe to give them some food or something.

I don’t even give much credence to ‘actual’ psychics. I mean, I watched a few episodes of the John Edward show and the latest Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, but I’m not gonna believe them if they say I’m gonna lose my memories…much less someone who’s homeless on the street.

But this is the first indication Thomas was gonna have someone attack her.

Martin

While a homeless person might say you’re gonna lose your memories and that’s one thing, but when a 9-year old who’s been ‘recruited’ by your supernatural government agency says the same thing, well I might give it a bit more credence.

Martin was pretty specific too, actually mentioning that someone in the Court was gonna give the order. That’s not really something you would just randomly expect to hear.

So with multiple collaborating prophets telling me I was gonna lose my memories, I suppose I might start to believe, and that’s what Thomas did.

I’m not sure my first reaction would be to write letters to my future self, rather I would try my best to make sure the event never happened in the first place. I mean, the psychics did not say that your future self would benefit from letters you left for her.

Retrospective

So here we are…with multiple prophets indicating she was gonna be attacked, Thomas had some decisions to make and questions to answer. How could she best get through this situation? Was the memory wipe inevitable? What could she do to prevent the mind wipe? What could she do to recover her memories once the attack occurred? Finally, who was behind the whole thing?

Thomas seems to have started with the idea that this was inevitably gonna happen so she set about making the best of it. She decided to help her future self with these notes in the hope that she could survive long enough to figure out who attacked her. But the fact that Martin indicated that someone in the Court gave the order means this is a pretty serious deal.

I still haven’t given up on the idea that this could be some kind of Total Recall thing where she’s actually the person behind the memory wipe but we haven’t gotten much closer to find out who actually did it.
