The Rook Chapter 11 – Apex House (Part 2)
So from the first part of Chapter 11…emergency meeting called…lunch with Lady Linda Farrier…assessment of Thomas’ training or lack of her using her abilities…crazy use of Myfanwy’s powers on her driver…
Now on to chapter 11 part 2 in which we’ll see the rest of the Checquy Court and see what everyone thinks about the imminent invasion of designer mutants.

Chess Pieces
Two Rooks, Two Knights (I guess the British call them the Chevaliers), Two Bishops…and a Lady and a Lord instead of King and Queen because of real royalty.
These little history lessons are pretty cool and while they shine a light on the past of the Checquy they also reveal a lot about the current members of the court.
Anyway I want to put a cheat sheet here for who’s who…
- Rooks – Gestalt and Myfanwy
- Chevaliers – Heretic Gubbins, Joshua Eckhart
- Bishops – Aldrich, Conrad Grantchester (this is the guy who used to be a Rook that Myfanwy took over for)
- Lady Linda Farrier
- Lord Sir Henry
Apex House
Once they get to Apex House Myfanwy started practicing her abilities again and this time I wasn’t as worried when she made someone drop her briefcase rather than mess with someone driving a car.
We meet the Court and Myfanwy kept up her lie about getting mugged and everyone bought it even though some knew something was different, the mugging explanation was enough to throw off any further questioning.
And then she dove into the reason for the meeting…The Grafters.
Surveillance
We already got a good briefing on the Grafters in a previous chapter where Thomas left notes for Myfanwy and we saw Peter Van Syoc in the interrogation. This time around though we actually get to see the capture of the spy. It’s another good fight scene, similar to the battle with the Antler Cult, and we already knew the outcome though there was no indication that Van Syoc was able to hulk out like he did in the bed and breakfast.
With the footage of the assault everyone was on board with preparing for the Grafters. Using common sense, which the others seemed to be lacking, and the notes she had been given, Myfanwy did a good job of taking control of the situation and getting things rolling as I would expect a good Rook would do. And this time around, everyone seemed to accept what she said at face value…I don’t think any of them felt that she was acting out of character during this meeting.
Retrospective
So here we are…11 chapters in and things are really starting to take shape. The Checquy are mobilizing to protect the British Isles and we’ve gotten to see the Court, one of whom Thomas believes was behind the attack on Myfanwy.
Personally, I’m enjoying things quite a bit. There’s mutants and supernatural abilities, someone who can basically turn into the Hulk, a whip wielding professor, and a whole group of scientists bent on taking over the world, or at least England. We’re about a quarter of the way through and I’m certainly looking forward to more. I hope you’re enjoying this as much as I am.
Oh, and I am also enjoying the TV show on STARZ. It doesn’t appear to be the same story so far but it’s got it’s own mystery going on which is intriguing.
