Friday at Comic-Con or Earth-712?

With the 50th San Diego Comic-Con in the rear view mirror I wanted to take a look back to assess a bit of what I excperienced so today I go to a Friday panel that wasn’t on my original list. Actually I’m glad I saw the Bless the Harts panel since it looks like a show I could enjoy and the only reason it wasn’t on my schedule was because I was looking forward to seeing the Rick and Morty panel later in the day. Regardless, it was a good and informative panel. While I was waiting in the Indigo Ballroom I also had an opportunity to read through Avengers #85 from back in 1971.

SDCC 2019 Friday – Bless The Harts

The network that brought you the Simpsons, the Griffins, and the Belchers now presents the Harts! FOX’s new half-hour comedy, Bless the Harts, features your new favorite good ol’ Southern family. Jenny Hart (Kristen Wiig) supports her lottery scratcher-obsessed mother, Betty (Maya Rudolph), and her witty creative daughter, Violet (Jillian Bell). With the help of her eternally optimistic dreamer boyfriend Wayne (Ike Barinholtz), they hope to one day achieve the American dream. While they are always struggling to make ends meet, they’re already rich in friends, family, and laughter. Get an exclusive first-look into your next animation obsession with executive producers, Emmy Award-winner Emily Spivey (Wine Country, Parks and Recreation, Saturday Night Live), and Academy Award winners Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) and the all-star cast behind the Harts.

This new show looks promising and since the creators indicated they took inspiration from King of the Hill, I think it’s worth a look. Emily Spivey seemed to have a good handle on the current show and seemed to have some insight into the success of King of the Hill so I’m hopeful that this might breathe life into the Fox animation block. I for one have not been much of a fan of Bob’s Burgers even though I like the people involved in that show – there’s just too much shouting going on. The Simpsons have become a bit stale after all these years, and Family Guy is always a hit or miss for me. With the current crop of prime time shows I started wondering if I’m no longer in the target audience of these animated shows but then I look at South Park and realize it’s not me, it’s them.

Pulling together academy award winning creators and throwing in Jesus as a character, this might just be the show that brings me back to Fox on Sunday evenings. I suppose it’ll depend on how much politics they choose to embed in the show but hopefully the writers understand that the country isn’t monolithic and to reach the largest audience, worshiping a single political ideology will only kill your show.

A Look at Avengers #85

The World is Not For Burning!
By Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, John Buscema, and Frank Giacoia.
Published by Marvel Comics, 1971.
Somehow Goliath, Vision, Wanda, and Quicksilver ended up in an alternate dimension where they face off against the Squadron Supreme as our heroes try to save that world from some kind of solar catastrophe.

Apparently this is the first time the Avengers or anyone in the Marvel Universe has met the Squadron Supreme and since they bear a similarity to the Squadron Sinister who the team fought in earlier issues, there was animosity right away.

After a mission away from home in previous issues, the Avengers found themselves in Cosmopolis which seems to be the Earth-712 equivalent of Metropolis. Yup, the foursome somehow found their way to Earth-712 and immediately start a fight with a pseudo Justice League.

  • American Eagle – Hawkman
  • Hawkeye – Green Arrow
  • Doctor Spectrum – Green Lantern
  • Hyperion – Superman
  • Nighthawk – Batman
  • Lady Lark – Black Canary
  • Tom Thumb – Atom
  • Whizzer – Flash

There’s some good fight depictions and the art is pretty cool but I wonder if things could have been resolved better if the heroes and ‘villains’ just talked a bit.
