Rookies, Goons, and the Next Chapter
Today’s looking like it’s gonna be a good day so I started things out with some reading, some comics, and a look back at the Home Run Derby…
I wish my job was as exciting as Myfanwy’s but then again I don’t have superpowers and my boss only conducts interviews, not interrogations. Today our hero participates in a full blown interrogation.
As for jobs though, I think I’d wilt if I had to deal with the types of things The Goon has to deal with on am regular basis. Today he took on a mummy with a pretty cool backstory.
Finally, we may be seeing a passing of the baton in the talents displayed during the Home Run Derby but I wonder who the real winner was.
The Interrogation
Chapter 5 of The Rook was a cool look back at events that occurred when Thomas was in charge of Myfanwy’s body. Even though she was not in the middle of the action, she kicked butt by coordinating everyone who was involved. She certainly demonstrated her tactical thinking ability in dealing with the ectoplasmic constructs.
In Chapter 6 today Myfanwy heads into an interrogation where I’m thinking we might find out more about what’s happening in the Checquy outside the focus we’ve seen about who attacked our hero.
The Goon #3
The Secret History of Seti the South-Side Mummy
Each of these Goon issues tells a fairly self contained story but even in less than 25 pages the narrative is so good! We get an origin, a curse, a rampage, and a battle all in 24 pages and I’m lovin all of it! The story is great, the art is cool, and the world Eric Powell has created around these characters is rich and detailed. I’m certainly gonna continue this series as long as it’s written so well and I definitely recommend this for a Read.
Will the Real Victor Please Stand Up?
Ok so, some guy named Pete Alonso won the Home Run Derby at the All Star Game on Monday but I’m not really sure he was the true victor. Sure, he smashed 57 total home runs – 14/20/23 – and beat out the second place contender in the finals to claim the win, but I think Vlad was the true victor.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. crushed 91 HRs in the 3 rounds – 29/40!/22 – but fell one shy in the final head to head competition against Alonso. Vlad also had 3 of the 5 longest HRs with his (and the derby’s) longest measuring 488 feet.
In my mind, Vlad took the real crown and I would look for him to dominate this contest for many years to come…he is just a rookie and 20 years old after all.
