A Rook and an Angel head to Comic-Con

Chronicling The Rook

On Sunday I tried out an experiment where I took a look at the Angel game as it went on and I kinda enjoyed it. It was a bit rough trying to keep up with things in real time, but that’s the nature of a live event. Today I want to try a similar thing as I read through, or listen to, a book.

I’ve read The Rook a while ago and I really enjoyed it. With the TV series coming out soon, I felt it was worth a re-reading. I’m gonna try to put a bit of a twist on that read by commenting on things as I go through the story…basically like I normally do in my head.

My basic idea is to read throughout the day during breaks as I usually do but I want to keep a running track of what’s going on and what I think of it. We’ll see how this goes, but I’m thinking it could be fun.

You can follow along on the separate page I set up for this experiment.

Upton Unleashed

On Sunday I was talking to my father about the Angels and I commented on the fact that I wasn’t too sure I was glad to see Justin Upton coming off the injured reserve. In my mind, the Angels had started to mesh as a team and were starting to build some chemistry in recent weeks with Goodwin, Puello, and Calhoun sharing time in the two corner outfield spots.

Calhoun has been having a tough time of it lately laying down a .235 batting average with 15 home runs and 37 driven in. Goodwin and Puello on the other hand have been getting on base pretty well with Goodwin putting out a .289 BA, 6 HRs, and24 RBIS and Puello stacking up with a nice .390 BA along with 3 HRs and 12 RBIs.

The 3 of them have been performing pretty well and the Angels have made a push recently to get back above .500 and into a position to challenge for the Wild Card.

Now Upton is back and we have to lose a part of that chemistry. I wasn’t sure that was a good thing but I’m happy to say, at least for the first game, I am pleased with the results.

In the first pitch he saw on Monday, the first pitch he encountered in the 2019 season, Justin Upton smashed a home run. He went on to go 2 for 4 with that home run, a single, and a walk thrown in for good measure. He picked up 5 total bases which is pretty dang good for a guy starting his first game of the year.

I’m just sad that it had to come on game 73.

SDCC 2019

The San Diego International Comic-Con is just about a month away and I’m starting to get really hyped about it. This 50th anniversary year looks to be pretty awesome and while some of the players like Warner Brothers and NerdHQ won’t be there in force, I think this is shaping up to be one of the best cons yet.

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how things play out at the Eisners where I’ve read a bunch of the nominees. Bitter Root goes up against Man-Eaters for Best New Series and Immortal Hulk faces off against Batman for Best Continuing Series.

In any case, I’m gonna start throwing together some thoughts here leading up to the con about the comics, events, and overall stuff I’m excited about for SDCC 2019.
