Glory Days
Beginnings and Endings but Glory in Both
These may be the best days to be a geek. With Avengers: Endgame dominating the movie theaters, Game of Thrones dominating television, various comics from numerous publishers developing cool stories and books staring female astronauts, epic magic, and clever protagonists, if it’s not the best days, it’s certainly a series of fun days.
An Epic Battle
The Long Night, episode 3 of season 8 of Game of Thrones was truly an epic battle. We all knew it was coming. The whole of this last season and quite a bit of the previous season were all leading up to this fight and I think they did a great job of living up to what was expected. Fan favorites died, dragons lit things on fire, the Night King raised people from the dead, and it was a joy to witness.
I was sitting on the edge of my seat as people were being chased through the halls of Winterfell. I screamed in denial as the evil minions of the Night King’s army came back to life even after they’d been cut down with fire and dragon glass. I smiled knowingly when the women and children thought to be safe in the crypts of the castle were attacked by the Stark ancestors.
It was one of the most satisfying battle scenes I’ve seen on television and the end was spectacular.
While there’s still a bunch of episodes remaining to pick up the pieces from this fight and figure out who’s gonna sit on the Iron Throne, this was the ultimate episode of the season if not the entire show in my view. And it was awesome!
Heading into a Storm
X-Men: Red #3 The Hate Machine: Part 3: Rising Storm by Tom Taylor, Mahmud Asrar, and Ive Svorcina. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
In the last issue, Jean Grey and the team rescued a new mutant named Trinary but in the process met up with one of the dreaded sentinels. Surprisingly, it turns out that Trinary is a technopath and we find out that means she can control technology…she doesn’t have to worry about a sentinel, she can make it her pet. But as they fly towards the safety of Wakanda, Storm isn’t so pleased to see a giant mutant hating robot headed her way. She lashes out at the X-Men and demonstrates how she’s been compromised by a strain of mutant hating nanites. The story that’s continuing to develop in this issue is definitely worth a Read.
It’s a Wrap
X-Men: Red #3 is still building up what is looking like a very interesting story while The Long Night brings the Game of Thrones around the bend towards its conclusion but both installments are enjoyable. This is a fun time to be a geek and I’m excited for the beginnings and endings that are all over the sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero genres and I hope these glory days continue as new stories develop and evolve.
