Looking for Some Heroes
Heros are Hard to Find
Today I’m taking a look at a team in need of a few heroes and a fledgling hero taking his first steps. My favorite team in MLB is the Angels and they haven’t been doing so hot to kick off the season. 12 wins are a few below where I expected them to be at this point so I’m hoping they find a hero to help them start winning some games.
As far as the young hero, I started reading Invincible today by Robert Kirkman and would love to see the teenager on my baseball team. He’d certainly fill the recipe the Angels are looking for and while he found his blue, yellow, and black costume, he’d look pretty good in red, white, and blue. Too bad he’s only in a comic book.
The Angels Need a Hero
After spending tons of money for the best player in baseball, my Angels still haven’t figured out how to put quality players around him. Sure, they’ve tried. Shohei Ohtani is pretty good but he’s still injured. Albert Pujols is a future Hall of Famer but he’s a bit beyond his prime. And once again, just like last season, injuries have taken a huge toll.
Ok, they’re not off to a completely horrible start but at 12–17, things haven’t really been going their way. They really were relying on their offense to keep them in games but they don’t seem to be scoring the number of runs they expected. They also haven’t been getting much in the way of pitching so far. They’ve scored 136 which is kinda in the middle of the pack but they’ve given up 142 which isn’t so hot. Trout has looked good and there have been a few bright spots in Brian Goodwin, Andrelton Simmons, and David Fletcher but things just haven’t meshed yet this season.
So as they head into the last few days of April I’m hoping they find a hero…maybe a pitcher…maybe a hitter…perhaps somebody returning from the injured reserve…I don’t know but at least they’re only 5 1/2 games outta first and they’ve got plenty of time to find the chemistry they need to win.
Hero Found
Invincible #1 Family Matters: Part One by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Bill Crabtree. Published by Image Comics, 2003.
Invincible is a new hero to me, created by Robert Kirkman, the mind behind the long running comic and TV show, The Walking Dead and from what I’ve heard it’s a pretty good read. This first issue gives a nice introduction to the character and while it doesn’t provide a bonafide origin story, it does show Mark Grayson growing into his powers. When I say growing into them, that’s because his dad is a superhero as well and we see him flying around, fighting bad guys, and saving the day.
Mark begins the book a relatively normal teenager but as things progress he’s picking up cars, flying around, and his dad even introduces him to a fashion designer to develop a costume. Things are pretty fun in this first issue and while this was more of a character building story than a world building one, I was glad to give this a Read.
It’s a Wrap
I wonder what it’d be like to have a hero come off the pages of a comic book to play for your baseball team. Or to put an end to some of the horrible things us normal humans do to each other. Too bad we can’t have someone like Mark Grayson to save the day when we need him. At least we can read about him though.
