Albion and San Francisco’s Underworld
Magic in DC and a Turn for Free-to-Play
Today I jumped onboard the latest DC Universe reading group selection and tackled Zantanna #1. It’s an interesting title since she is clearly established in the magical realm of DC Comics which I’m not too familiar with. I suppose I know Shazam is magical and that Superman doesn’t fare too well against magical enemies, but that’s as far as my knowledge goes.
Speaking of how far my knowledge goes, I also decided to take a step back towards a game I was heavily into a while back…Albion Online. I spent quite a bit of time in this game and had some fun but burnt out over a year ago. Now, I’ve heard it went free to play and I want to see what’s been going on there since I’ve been gone.
The Magical World of DC
Zantanna #1 by Paul Dini, Stephane Roux, and Karl Story. Published by DC Comics, 2010.
I don’t know too much about the magical side of the DC Universe but this issue pulled me into it in a determined fashion. Zantanna is set to take on Brother Knight as he works to expand the empire he’s built in the mystic underworld of San Francisco. With demons and magic, creatures and a few human police, this is an interesting Read to start off my introduction to the supernatural side of DC Comics.
Thinking about Jumping back into Albion
Yesterday as I was wandering around the web doing my typical 6 degrees ramble, I ran across UltraViolet’s post on Endgame Viable talking about starting up in Albion Online. It got me thinking about how I dove into that game with both feet for a while and then backed off when I realized they were not bringing out the promised iOS version anytime soon.
Thinking back to the enjoyment I got from the game, I think I will reload it on my machine and give it another run. I wonder if the iOS version is out yet and if it is as viable as they suggested it would be.
In any case, I learned, since I had left, the game has gone free to play…or rather you no longer have to buy the game initially anymore. There’s still a premium level you can pay for that gives access to certain things but I’m not sure how far that goes in the current environment. Previously to really make a mark in crafting it was worth it to pay for premium but I’ll have to dive in a bit to see if there are still limitations on the free to play experience.
I’ll let you know how things go…
It’s a Wrap
So today I kinda dipped my toe into a couple of new things. Well, I’ve been in Albion Online before but things have change so it really is a new experience and Zantanna is a completely new adventure to check out. I’m hoping to see some nice improvements to Albion and maybe even an iOS version I can play on my iPad, but I haven’t dove in far enough to figure that out yet. As for the female magician, I enjoyed her first issue and I’m intrigued to see how she deals with Brother Knight and if she can defend San Francisco from the forces of darkness.
