Recommended Reading for Week 7 of 2019
This week I ran through a lot of words as I read a 750+ page novel and dove into a second 600+ page book. Even with all the written words I got in my fair share of sequential art and finished off a full story arc from DC and started a second. On the whole it was a pretty good week with lots of books I recommend reading and one that I really had a difficult time with and would recommend skipping and a couple that were just not my cup of tea.
Early Marvel
- Avengers #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Published by Marvel Comics, 1964. This was definitely a Must Read as we see Captain America join the team.
- Uncanny X-Men #2 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Published by Marvel Comics, 1963. I rated this battle against the Vanisher a C- which I will equate to a Skip since I didn’t like this one too much.
- Uncanny X-Men #3 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Published by Marvel Comics, 1964. The Blob isn’t the best villain and his coopting of the carnival freaks to fight the X-Men is less than inspired so I’d rate this pretty much a Skip
- Uncanny X-Men #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Published by Marvel Comics, 1964. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants takes on the X-Men with first appearances by Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. This is a Must Read as it also includes Magneto as the leader of the evil mutants.
DC Universe
- Flashpoint #1 – #5 by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. Published by DC Comics, 2011. This event is a Must Read that I plan on commenting on in a bit of depth in the future. It was really cool and even though I kinda knew what was gonna happen since I’ve watched the Flash TV show I still really enjoyed the way things were laid out and how they developed.
- Red Hood: The Lost Days #1 – #2 by Judd Winick and Pablo Rainmondi. Published by DC Comics, 2010. So far this is a Must Read in my book. The first issue wasn’t the best but it worked as a setup for the second and what I expect are the next few issues. This is a story I’ve never heard before and I have never even heard of the Red Hood previously so I’m finding this really good. I’ll have more to say when I finish but for now I’d definitely recommend this series.
Modern Marvel
- Doctor Strange #3 By Mark Waid and Jesus Saiz. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018. I took a look at this the other day and would recommend this as a Read.
Novels
- The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. Published by Tor, 1990. I love The Wheel of Time and this book is a great kickoff to that series. The kids from the remote farming village get swept up in a grand adventure that takes them from jbustling cities and ancient ruins to the borderlands where nature fights with the Blight and Dark faces the Light. If you’re a fan of fantasy or just epics you can’t go wrong with this one – I highly recommend this as a Must Read.
- Night Film by Marisha Pessl. This book was interesting but difficult to get into. I think my main issue with it was that it had visual presentations to go with the story and since I was listening to the audiobook I didn’t really get the whole picture so to speak. There was definitely something there that I could see worth the read but it would have taken me reading the physical book to get into it. As it is, I’d recommend Skiping this if you’re an audiobook listener. But in the future I might give this another try if I get my hands on the paper book.
