My Pull List for Week 3 of 2019
This week I actually got around to reviewing selections from DC Universe and Comixology Unlimited so I expanded my list.
Comixology
- Battlestar Galactica: Classic #3 by John Jackson Miller and Daniel HDR. Published by Dynamite Entertainment, 2019. – Actually I’m gonna start with the first issue of this that came out in October since somehow it flew past my radar back then.
- Gideon Falls #10 by Jeff Lemre and Andrea Sorrentino. Published by Image Comics, 2019 – Issue #10 came out this week but I’m still staring at issue #1 in my ‘to read’ pile. I’m gonna get to this so I can at least have less than double digits in my backlog.
- The Wicked + The Divine #41 by Kieran Gilles, Jamie McKelvie, and Matthew Wilson. Published by Image Comics, 2019. Ok, this series is on issue #41 and while I’ve read the first trade paperback, I could certainly use a refresher. I know I won’t get to the whole series in a week but I can at least put this issue as a placeholder so I remember I want to get back to reading this series.
- The Batman Who Laughs #2 by Scott Snyder and Jock. Published by DC Comics, 2019. I usually stay away from DC and AMrvel when I look for top listed weekly comics but this one was reviewed by more than 20 critics and still had a rating over 9 so I figured it must be good. I’ll jump onboard with issue 1 and see if the critics are correct.
- Shadowman #11 by Andy Diggle and Renata Guedes. Published by Valiant Comics, 2019. It looks like this is the closing installment of the 3rd trade so I figure it’s a good time to pick up the first highly rated issue to see what this series is all about.
Marvel Unlimited Weekly Releases
As is the case with a bunch of the comics I’m reading, I have a lot of catching up to do. This week though, there are a couple #1s I want to read so I should at least be caught up with them…
- Darth Vader #18 by Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. This issue finished up the battle of Mon Cala and I can;t wait to see where it goes.
- Champions #22 by Jim Zub and Kevin Libranda. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. I’ve fallen way behind in this series even though I enjoy it…so much so that it’s got a new creative team. I’m gonna have to catch up soon.
- The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #34 by Ryan North and Derek Charm. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. I’ve been loving Doreen everywhere I see her so of course I’m gonna read this series. It’s kinda cool with Kraven featuring so heavily in it right now.
- New Mutants: Dead Souls #5 by Matthew Rosenberg and Adam Gotham. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. They’re messing with Doctor Strange now so this should be interesting.
- Old Man Logan #43 by Ed Brisson and Juan Ferreyra. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. I think things are getting interesting since it seems we’re leading up to a rebirth of Wolverine.
- Star Wars: Thrawn #6 by by Jody Houser and Luke Ross. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. I’ve been enjoying the ride so far so I’m all in with this title.
- X-23 #1 by Mariko Tamaki and Juan Cabal. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. How could I not want to kick off a new Laura Kinney series, she’s one of my favorites!
- The Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley. Published by Marvel Comics, 2019. A new beginning for Parker…how can I not jump on board?
Marvel 1963
I’m kinda mixing things up with my older Marvel reading. I want to keep going year by year but I’m not gonna stick to reading ALL the issues. Instead I’m gonna follow along with issues that are considered essential according to the CMRO or that are included in MMY from Comic Book Herald, or those that look cool…
- Amazing Spider-Man #6 Spidey faces off against the Lizard for the first time.
- Journey into Mystery #98 Thor and Odin, and Ice Giants, looks pretty cool.
- Tales to Astonish #49 The Birth of Giant-Man!
- Avengers #2 let’s see how the team does in their 2nd installment.
DC Universe
This week I’m gonna add the book club selection for DC Universe. The guys over at DCU have come a long way in their comic selection so I figure I can give them more of a try. While I don’t think I’ll be able to march through DC continuity, I can at least start learning more about their heroes and villains. This week, I think we’re looking at villains as the reading focuses on Deadshot and Katana.
- Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Deadshot and Katana by Brian Buccellato, Mike W. Barr, Victoria Bodganovic, and Diogenes Neves. Published by DC Comics, 2016.
Comixology Unlimited
This week I also wanted to dive into another comic service I subscribe to and pull something from Comixology Unlimited. I haven’t seen any book clubs devoted to the CU library but there really should be one…I’ll have to look harder this week. In any case, there are tons of selections available to choose from so I decided to go with one that has a bit of a prominent position right now – Deadly Class. SyFy channel will be starting up their Deadly Class TV series late this month and they’ve already released the pilot. I’m excited to see how this translation from comic to TV goes and I’m rooting for a good show. Anyway, I’m throwing Deadly Class into this weeks Pull List…
- Deadly Class volume 1: Reagan Youth by Rick Remender, Wesley Craig, and Lee Loughridge. Published by Image Comics, 2014.
