Planned Reading for December 2018
I feel pretty good about the reading I’ve done so far this year and with only this final month to go, I’ve easily passed my goal of 58 books read in 2018. I’m actually sitting at 61 books heading into December and I figure I’ll read another 4 or so.
On the whole, I think I did a good job of spreading out my reading this year by looking at science texts and historical books along with my typical sci-fi and fantasy reading. I’ll have to see if I want to add any genres to my list for next year but that’s for another post.
Science & Inquiry Book Club
- The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes – covering the discovery of nuclear fission, the Manhattan Project, and the bombings that ended the 2nd World War, this looks like a pretty intense book that won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1988, the National Book Award in 1987, and the National Book Critics Award in 1987. Kinda intense to finish the year with but it looks good.
SciFi & Fantasy Book Club
- China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F. McHugh – this is the science fiction title of the month and from the list of award nominations and wins it looks promising – Hugo and Nebula award nominations and it won the Locus award for Best First Novel.
- The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang – I didn’t get around to reading this in September but since I saw that it got quite a few votes for the best fantasy book of 2018 on Goodreads, I figured I had to give it a read. Looking at the description we’ve got military school, magic, drugs, and a full blown war in a land that is based on 20th century China. This looks like fun.
Sword & Laser Book Club
- Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr by John Crowley – A man finds a dying crow and nurses it back to health and in return, the bird tells the man an incredible story. Just from a quick read of the Prologue this looks to be a really cool book.
