Curation and Maintenance

Daily Ramble 41:

The DC Universe subscription service is a little over a month old and I’m glad I’ve given it a try. So far the video and original content are pretty good though I haven’t watch much and I’m glad to see some of the comic titles they’ve put up for reading. The problem I have with it is the limited time curation system that they’ve implemented. Basically, story arcs are pushed out to the service for about 2 weeks and then they’re taken down. It’s definitely more like Netflix than Marvel Unlimited but then Netflix has thousands of titles available to stay on the service all the time, DC Universe doesn’t quite have that yet. Anyway, today I take a look at the current crop of titles coming to the service and leaving soon as well as the frustration I ran into with Star Trek Online as I wanted to play this morning.

Of Course There’s Maintenance

So, the day I decide I’m gonna head back into Star Trek Online to start my journey to at least level 10, there’s maintenance.

Apparently, STO has a Wednesday schedule for downtime and it just happens to start up about the time I’d be getting into the game in the morning. Oh well…there’s always tomorrow.

DC Universe Limited Releases

Ok, so DC Universe has chosen a strange way of providing comics for subscribers to read. Basically they’ve decided that rather than publish their comics to the service that people are paying for they’d rather set up a system of limited releases. Ending on October 22nd was The Death of Superman. Yup – if you wanted to read that…you can’t…it’s gone. I’m not sure how long it’s gone for but it is currently unavailable for reading on DC Universe.

I suppose they want to differentiate themselves from Marvel who releases new comics on a weekly basis and who puts out comics pretty much 6 months after they’ve been released as floppies. I guess that’s differentiation when most titles that have come out in the past 6 months only have a single #1 issue available for reading.

Curation is a good thing when done properly…this is just stingy. There was no way I was gonna be able to read all issues in The Death of Superman AND the 20+ issues of Teen Titans they released. Now they’re put back into their archive for who knows how long. Perhaps before my year long subscription runs out they’ll come back around.

In any case The Long Halloween looks good but then there are a bunch of comics leaving soon…All the Teen Titans below are gone as of October 29th so you better read them soon.

Limited Releases for DC Universe October 23rd:

  • Batman: The Long Halloween
    • Last chance:

      • The New Teen Titans #28 – 40
      • Tales of the Teen Titans #41
      • The New Teen Titans Annual #2

I haven’t fully figured out this curation thing but so far it’s really annoying.
