Reading Plans for October 2018
This month I’m gonna target 6 books since it took me a few days into this month to finish off Foundation and Earth by Issac Asimov. There’s a 7th hidden in here but I’m not gonna stress if I don’t get around to it. More than that though, I wanted to add a self development or productivity book to take a look at but I haven’t taken the time to pick one out yet…maybe I’ll kick off that reading next month.
Book Clubs
- Science And Inquiry Book Club: The Genius of Birds by Jennifer Ackerman – this is a Book that’s been on my ‘to be read’ list for a while and after last month’s Other Minds about how smart octopi are, I figure it’s appropriate. I’ve always been fascinated by birds and actually trained pigeons in psychology class during college and raised chickens as a high schooler. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what science has to say about how smart crows, chickens, parrots, and raptors are.
- Mysterious Galaxy Book Club: Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride – My understanding of this book is that it’s a YA humorous horror story that’s full of fun and excitement. I’m looking forward to this one.
- Sword and Laser: Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff – this book won the World Fantasy award for Best Novel In 2016 so with that kind of recommendation I’m looking forward to seeing what this is all about.
- SciFi & Fantasy Book Club: Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany – as usual this club is reading 2 books this month and I’m not sure I’ll get to both. This book won the Nebula and Hugo back in the 60s so I think I’ll give it priority. The other book is The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickenson looks pretty good too but I’m gonna make sure to get through these others first.
- History Book Club (inspired by): The Case Against Impeaching Trump by Alan Dershowitz – I’ve grown tired of the History Book Club on Goodreads pushing their political agenda by setting up monthly reads for every anti-Trump doorstop that comes out – Comey, Omarosa, Woodward. I thought it was a history book club not a bash the President with whatever drivel happens to be popular this month book club. Regardless, I’ve enjoyed following them when they tackle topics like the Federalist Papers, North Korea, and historical Presidents like James Madison – any of the crap that has been published about Trump in the past couple years has been political buffoonery and not history. One book though that I’ve decided to give a try is something that was written by someone I respected long before Trump entered politics and who is actually not a fan of the President. Alan Dershowitz put out The Case Against Impeaching Trump not because he’s a conservative – he’s not, not because he’s a Republican – he’s not, not because he’s BFFs with the President – he’s actually been pretty critical of Trump’s antics, but because he has always believed in justice and civil liberties and when he refuses to play along with his friends who are bashing the President I take note and want to know what he has to say. I can’t imagine that this book will be a feel good-piece about how great the President is, nor can I imagine it’s gonna bash those who hate Trump. I do figure it’ll layout an argument for what’s going on in today’s political arena and what’s wrong with the current calls for impeachment based on hearsay and rumor that started before the current officeholder was even sworn into office. Perhaps someday the History Book Club will get around to reading it too.
Continuing Series
Raymond Feist’s Riftwar: Shadow of a Dark Queen – last month I finished off the Krondor’s Sons duology so I’ve made it through 9 of the novels in this ongoing series and I’m still enjoying it. Every once in a while there’s a stumble but the world still holds my interest solidly. I did finish off Asimov’s Foundation series so I may add another project soon but this month I’ll hold off and stick with what I’ve got here for now.
