Seattle Clings to Hope while Arizona sees it Fade Away
Dreams are still alive in Seattle as pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach hit a grand slam in the 8th to power the Mariners past Houston and keep their slim postseason hopes alive. Astros center fielder Jake Marsnick put together a couple of stellar plays after he took over for Josh Reddick who left with an injury but it wasn’t enough to stop the Mariners from surviving another day.
Meanwhile, Arizona only managed 3 hits and a solo home run by A. J. Pollock against strong pitching from Kyle Hendricks and the Cubs. They’re watching their postseason chances dwindle as they fell 5 games out of both the wild card and the NL West race with their 3rd loss in a row.
Another Lead Change
In LA the Dodgers and Rockies swapped positions again as Hyun-Jin Ryu threw a strong 7 innings of shutout ball and the Dodgers retook first place in the NL West. Joc Pederson smacked 2 home runs in the effort as the Dodgers improved to 3-1 against the Rockies in September.
In other Western games, Chris Shaw went 3-3 and Crawford and Longoria smacked home runs as the Giants beat the Padres in San Diego and Texas was shutout on a 2-hitter by the Rays.
