Daily Ramble 28: Angelville’s Politics Playing Old Games
Today I finally caught up on the 3rd season of Preacher and I’m sure glad I recorded the whole thing. While the season started well, it just got better and better as things went along and the finale was great. It capped things off for the season and set things up nicely for season 4. I’m not sure I can say the same thing for Jack Ryan as I did not like the 3rd episode. Finally, I installed and started up a game that’s been out for quite a while that I’ve never given a chance.
Preacher Catch Up
One thing I will say about the current layout of television seasons is that with so many shows only providing 10 episodes it really feels like if I miss or postpone one episode I can’t catch up until the end of the season. That’s what seems to have happened with Preacher this season. I don’t recall what the instantiating event was but while I recorded the all episodes on my TiVo I did not watch them during the weeks they aired. Well that basically started a cascade where the season is now over I didn’t make any posts about the show and I just this weekend finished watching it.
Needless to say it was another great season. Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy at the end of last season ended up down in Louisiana with Jesse’s grandmother in Angelville. This season spent a lot of time down there. Beyond that we also saw Jesse get his Voice back after dealing with the Grail. Hitler and Eugene show up again with the Saint of Killers chasing them. And the Devil and God make appearances. It was a really good season and one I’m probably going to have to re-watch to make sure that I didn’t miss things.
Trepidation and Poltics in Jack Ryan
So after watching the first couple of episodes of Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime I was really enjoying the show. The third episode however was clearly a step back. The show became slower and drawn out and they really went out of their way to try to incorporate new characters which we haven’t seen previously. I don’t think it worked very well. Added to the slow pace, they decided to throw politics into the show. Shortly after a scene where a French operative explained how in France if you’re Muslim you’re basically forced to live in a ghetto and are unemployed even if you are a medical doctor, she had the balls to question Jack Ryan about why he would possibly work for the CIA. She felt he shouldn’t do his job when she disagreed with the policies of the American government. I was kind of surprised and shocked because the first two episodes seem to be so good and so in touch with the way that I recall Tom Clancy wrote his characters. This to me was completely outside of what I remember. Oh well, I’m not giving up on the show but I am now going to approach it with more trepidation and wariness. Why did the writers have to interpose their views into what was starting to be a really cool show?
Evercrack 2
Back in the day I never really played Everquest. I didn’t get into MMOs until City of Heroes and then World of Warcraft and my only EQ experience was much later and only a dozen or so levels. I basically died trying to get to play with my buddies and had the wonderful experience of having a high level prick camped my corpse. Needless to say, with high level characters stiffiling my enjoyment of the game, I didn’t last long.
Now, one of the guilds I’m a member of is heading into Everquest 2 as a monthly game. Basically they’re doing what the MMO Book Club I game with has been doing each month and this month these guys are trying a game I never played but wanted to give a try. EQ2 is the ‘successor’ to EQ but from y understanding and hope I won’t have the problem of being corpse camped. Even if I did, I’ve got many years of MMO gaming behind me so I think I’d be able to handle that type of thing better all these years later.
Anyway, I am finally gonna give EQ2 a chance and after some research I decided to stick with what I’m most comfortable with, a healer. And rather than taking the easiest class, I chose the Channeler. We’ll see how things go throughout the month and possibly beyond.
