Daily Ramble 11: NAS is on the Way

I pulled the trigger or triggers and ordered the parts of my NAS and I think it’s gonna work out really well. We’ll see this weekend when everything gets here but I’m hoping I’ll be able to set things up easily.

Sonology and Western Digital

I ended up deciding on the Sonology DS918+ since it seemed to offer a good deal of performance and even the possibility of expansion beyond the 4 drives in the model. With 4 drives I should be able to get a good amount of space along with the security that the system can lose a drive without losing data. The 2 drive system would give me current space but I wanted to plan for the future. I also went with the DS918+ so I could have the space and the possibility of streaming video to my mobile devices.

As for the hard drives, I went with the Western Digital Red drives which should be pretty solid based on all the reviews I read. With 4 4TB drives I should have tons of space for all my game screenshots and videos and plenty of room to grow. If I start running outta space I could either upgrade to larger drives or I could get the DS517 for 5 more bays. I could even transfer videos from my TiVo from what I’ve read.

With all the heat we’ve been having here in San Diego I’m looking forward to setting this up. Once I get my stuff moved over I can access it during the day from my iPad even when my heat generating computers are turned off. I can’t wait.
