Calhoun Comes Through Again
Happily for the second game in a row the Angels won a game in which Andrew Heaney pitched. He didn’t get the win this time but he pitched well enough to leave the game with his team in contention. And in the following inning, Upton smacked a solo home run to put his team in the lead.
Needed More Than Upton’s 3 RBIs
Heaney put in 6 1/3 innings and in his last start before the All-Star break threw 101 pitches and gave up 3 runs, two earned. He really deserved the win again but the offense was a bit slow for him. Instead while they got going early with a run in the first and 2 in the 2nd they kinda went on hiatus until the 7th when Upton hit his home run.
Justin actually accounted for 3 of the RBIs in the game knocking in Simmons in the first, taking a walk in the 2nd to score Heaney, and then hitting his home run in the 7th. But the blast that really made the difference was Kole Calhoun’s 10th inning game winner to right center field.
That home run makes it 3 in the past 2 games and it is sure good to see Calhoun coming around finally. since he was on the DL back in June, he’s come back pretty strong and I certainly hope he keeps it up, the team really needs his offense if it hopes to contend down the road. With that winning home run, I give him my Player of the Game but Upton was really good and deserves it as well.
Today the Angels put another reliever on the mound in Deck McGuire (0–1, 6.10 ERA). He gets to go against one of the best pitchers in the majors in Clayton Kershaw (3–4, 2.61 ERA). As a left hander he’s gonna be even more difficult on the Angels who don’t hit too well against lefties…I just hope they hit well enough.
