Makeup Loss
For once I don’t blame the bullpen for a loss since the offense did nothing all game. Yup, KC and Brad Keller held the Angels’ offense to 3 hits and shut them out and it really wasn’t much of a good game from the Angels’ point of view.
This game was a make up game that’s part of a 3 game stretch where the Angels are in 3 different cities across the country in 3 days.
Shutdown
I suppose if you could link the frustration and anger over the fact that the offense worked their butts off the past couple of games to tie up those matches heading into the late innings only to have the game lost by the bullpen, then you could blame those pitchers. This was really all on the offense Monday. They were completely shutdown and while Tyler Skaggs pitched well – you can’t win if you don’t score any runs.
As the team heads back towards the .500 mark they are falling further from any hope to be in contention.
It really looked bad in the 8th when David Fletcher came in to pinch-hit. He was hit by Tim Hill and then stole second…scoring position with no outs. Maldonado moved him to 3rd wit ha grounder but then nothing. Chris Young struck out and Kinsler grounded to short. A perfect scoring opportunity squandered.
I would give my Player of the Game to Fletcher if someone managed to knock him in, but as it stands the only player who did much of anything was Skaggs. He went 7 innings, gave up a single run, and got stuck with the hard luck loss. His ERA is down to 2.69 and he threw an incredible 0.67 ERA in June. He deserves to have a better record than 6–5 but between the lack of offense and the bullpen, he suffers with mediocre stats.
Today, the Angels take on the Red Sox and send John Lamb (0–0 5.40 ERA) to the mound. The Sox counter with David Price (8–5 3.81 ERA) and hopefully the offense will show up in Fenway.
