Best Writer
- Tom King – Batman, Batman Annual #2, Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1, Mister Miracle (DC) – I’ve read some issues of King’s Batman and found them really good. I’ve also heard some good things about Mister Miracle so I would have no doubt that he is a strong contender in this category.
- Matt Kindt, Grass Kings (BOOM! Studios); Ether (Dark Horse); Eternity, X-O Manowar (Valiant) – I haven’t read any of these titles but have purchased a couple issues of X-O Manowar. Perhaps I’ll try to read them before Comic-Con.
- Jeff Lemire, Black Hammer (Dark Horse); Descender (Image) – I’ve read the first volume of Black Hammer and a single issue of Descender and enjoyed both.
- Marjorie Liu, Monstress (Image) – I’ve read the first volume of Monstress and enjoyed it but I haven’t read anything from the current year from Marjorie. This is a good story though, from what I’ve read.
- Mark Russell, The Flintstones (DC) – I hate to say it, but I really did not like this series. This title took the Flintstones that I knew and loved as a child and made them vehicles for political propaganda and social justice crap. I really did not like this and would never consider it a viable nominee as it reminds me of the trouble that the Hugos have encountered where voting is based not on merit but on politics.
Based on my knowledge of these writers, my opinion would be a choice between Tom King and Jeff Lemire. I’ve enjoy stuff from both authors so wouldn’t be surprised if either one wins this award.
