28 Days to #SDCC2018
With only 28 Days to #SDCC2018 I’ll take a look at the announcement about Harbor Drive that came out a day or two ago. Apparently the road in front of the Convention Center will not be open to car traffic during Comic-Con.
Harbor Drive Closed to Thru Traffic
I actually think this is a great idea as it will lead to a safer experience and should also facilitate crossing from the Convention Center to the Gaslamp District. One thing that’s always been a pain has been the crowds waiting to cross Harbor Drive. With car traffic in the past, there’d be hoards of people clustered near the crosswalks that not only interfered with crossing but also got in the way of the shuttles. With the closure of Harbor to through traffic I envision a much better situation down there.
It should also help out with trolley traffic since on the Gaslamp side of Harbor Drive, pedestrians would often get stuck between the trolley (or train) and the crosswalks.
As you can see from the maps, things should be much easier for pedestrians and the shuttles should be able to transit more freely.
From what I’ve seen as well, the parking structures are still going to be accessible but not via Harbor Drive in front of the Convention Center…for instance, the Hilton Bayfront parking structure will still be accessible from the Park Boulevard side of the Convention Center.
The bottom line is, plan accordingly since you don’t want to get downtown and end up on the wrong street. With all the one way streets and road closures things could be a bit messy for cars this year even though it should be better for pedestrians.
