Watching Television Week 24 of 2018

Last week I was sick and that provided me with an excuse for not watching too much tv. This week, I have no excuse but I guess I’m in a phase where I’m not watching too much. That’s plenty fine since I know things will change as I see that a bunch of shows I usually watch are coming back for the summer.

Favorites from the week ending June 16, 2018

This was another week with only a few shows watched though I think it’s more because I’ve wanted to watch older shows like Magnum PI or the original Odd Couple. I do see that Preacher is due back soon and I want to continue Black Mirror so I think things will pick up in the next few weeks. In any case, here are shows I enjoyed this week.

  • Westworld season 2 episode 8, Kiksuya – This episode basically told the entire story of how the Ghost Tribe of Indian hosts in Westworld developed awareness. Akecheta was a very dynamic character and I loved the portrayal Zahn McClarnon gave him. The tribe and Akecheta in particular definitely play a role in Ford’s ultimate narrative but we still don’t know what their destiny is. Once again the show uses great piano renditions of recent music…in this episode it was Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box
  • Alone – I think Sam was crazy to go after that huge snake and the wolf problem seems pretty prevelant. And Carleigh’s run in with that fish hook was horrible! 86 day’s in season 3 and only 5 days in this season. She was good but had bad luck.
  • Elementary season 6 episode 7, Sober Companions – This was one of the better episodes of recent seasons and it set things up for a long term story arc pitting Sherlock against Desmond Harrington’s Michael. We’ve seen that he’s got some skeletons in his closet but I didn’t expect him to be a serial killer.
  • Face Off season 13, episode 2, Moonlight Monsters – I was really disappointed by all of the makeups put together this week and I don’t think I would have put any of them into a movie…even a B movie on late night TV.
  • Jeremiah Johnson – this 1972 Sydney Pollack film featuring Robert Redford and it was really good. The cinematography was wonderful and the true story it portrays is pretty intense. Redford plays Jeremiah who comes back from the war and decides to head out to be a mountain man. He fortunately runs into Bear Claw, a seasoned veteran who teaches him how to survive in the mountains. In the end he turns into a true survivor but the people he grows to care about are slaughtered by Indians. It’s a great story, well acted and well directed. Definitely something I’d recommend.

Shows I Tried But Won’t Be Watching

Dark – I had no idea of what this was going in and while I have no problems with dubbed shows or murder mysteries, I really did not like this one. The acting reminded me of old 80s BBC productions, flat and very badly scripted. While I thought the supernatural aspect had some possible merit it was not enough that I’d like to continue it…too bad.
