Wanted, Bullpen Help

With another failure, the Angels really need to put up an advertisement…Wanted, bullpen help. Andrew Heaney pitched well. Well enough to win certainly. But the bullpen dropped the ball again and so the team leaves Oakland with a 2nd loss in a row, losing 6 of the last 10, and 9 1/2 games behind Houston in 3rd place in the AL West. Definitely not where they want to be nor where I expected them to be at this point of the season.

Bullpen Inconsistency

It’s starting to feel like the season is slipping away. With all the injuries and the inconsistency in the “bullpen by committee”, the team can’t seem to get anything going in the right direction.

Andrew Heaney was heading in the right direction today. Sure, he gave up 3 runs but after 106 pitches and 8 innings, he and the Angels were poised for a victory. The offense did their job scoring 5 runs and headed into the 9th, things looked good. But then Blake Parker gave up 2 runs in the 9th to let the Athletics tie it up while rookie Jake Jewel and Eduardo Paredes gave up the winning run in the 11th.

Offensively, Trout landed on base all 5 times he got up to bat, Kinsler picked up a double and a single, Chris Young hit his 5th HR of the season, and Pujols smacked the 625th of his career. But once extras hit, nobody did anything of note.

If only Heaney was allowed to finish the 9th.

Even giving up 3 runs, I give Heaney my Player of the Game. He put the team in position to win and they should have. Someday the bullpen will start working things out, I just hope that won’t be at a time when the offense stops scoring or the starters give up tons of runs. Right now though, I’m feeling kinda down for the team. They showed so much promise but with injuries and inconsistencies the first half hasn’t been what I wanted at all.

Today the team heads home to interleague play and the best of the NL West…the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jaime Barria (5–2, 2.61 ERA) faces off against Zack Greinke (5–5, 3.87 ERA) to kick off a 6 game homestand.

  1. Osuna is probably going to be available soon…. which was when the Jays season really went to hell. Of course, there is that “character” issue.

    • As much as we need the help I’m not sure the Angels could deal with his issues – they need help in the chemistry department as well I think.

      • Oh, I agree wholeheartedly – and outside of the allegations of abuse, he also went through a stint in the past where his anxiety issues were getting the better of him. As a closer. That’s tough too.

He hasn’t played in a long time and no clue when / if he gets back to the game, and hopefully he gets treatment for his mental issues (and serves his time if the allegations are correct). Someone will give him a chance somewhere, he is one of the best young closers in the game.

The organization that does that, however, will have to explain their reasons for doing so. Not an easy argument.
