Review of Avengers Vs. X-Men #3

Tensions continue to build as Captain America accepts the surrender of the X-Men after the battle of Utopia but things aren’t all as they seem as we soon see Steve locked in combat against Wolverine who was supposed to be on the Avengers’ side…what’s up with that? Avengers Vs. X-Men #3 continues the fight of Marvel’s supergroups and I’m enjoying every bit of it!

For this title, I’m just gonna post an image of the page from the front of the issue with the breakdown of who supposedly is on which side. At this point, there’s really no point to judging who’s good or bad, they are just on different teams against each other.

My Reading:

This issue starts off where Hope left Utopia in the previous issue. Wolverine is alive and healing but he was burned pretty bad when Hope escaped. That’s not gonna stop him from trying to warn the Avengers that the surrender they’re enjoying from the X-Men is a sham. Of course, Cap is duped and while he and Iron Man argue about if they can just put all the mutants in the Raft prison, the X-Men get a head start trying to find and protect Hope.

Meanwhile, Hope isn’t sitting idly waiting to be found. She’s hiding out in San Francisco putting together items that will help hide her location…and it works – according to Rachel who’s working for both sides, Hope is showing up in 5 different places at the same time.

Cap sends out squads of Avengers to 4 of the locations and heads to the Savage Land with Wolverine, Giant-Man, and Sharon Carter. He then confronts Wolverine once the quinjet takes off – blaming Logan for scaring Hope into running. Wolverine insists he’s just doing what needs to be done to save the universe and Cap attacks him. A pretty good fight breaks out and Wolverine clearly has the upper hand until Giant-Man and Sharon come to Cap’s aid. In an attempt to keep Logan outta the hunt for Hope, Rogers dumps Wolverine outta the quinjet but of course that’s not gonna stop Wolverine…nothing will.

What did I learn:

  • Captain America is turning out to be a real prick.
  • Rachel is playing both sides of the fight.
  • Hope is pretty resourceful but she still feels the Phoenix Force getting closer.

My Thoughts:

I’m not sure if it’s just these event issues, but I really am not liking Captain America. He always seems to be trying to impose his will on others and he thinks he knows what’s best for everyone – it’s really annoying. And this issue really highlights that. I was glad to see Wolverine not put up with his crap though. Actually, it looks like Iron Man wasn’t onboard with what Cap had in mind either.

In any case, Hope is doing a good job of staying free and hiding so far. And the mutants are doing a good job of avoiding the Avengers and staying one step closer to finding Hope.

Seeing these huge page layouts with all the Avengers and X-Men is pretty cool and I’m really enjoying the artwork. Romita is doing a good job here and everyone seems to be working at their best as far as I can tell.

While I’m not sure what’s gonna happen with the Phoenix and the two supergroups, the journey is sure shaping up to be a bunch of fun.

In all, this issue was great because of the Wolverine vs. Captain America fight. Of course Logan wins until Cap cheats and brings in backup, but it was nice to see Cap get his butt handed to him.

My Rating: A-
