Review of Tales to Astonish #46
After taking down Egghead last issue, Ant-Man and The Wasp can’t seem to find any bad guys to fight in the city so they decide to take a vacation. Too bad their relaxation time is interrupted by a one-eyed beast.

My Reading:
With no trouble to be found in the city Ant-Man and the Wasp head out to Greece for a vacation. Once there they find out that they’re unable to charter a boat to cruise around the islands because everyone’s scared. Apparently there’s a six story tall creature that’s been terrorizing the sailors. They finally get a ship captain to take them out to the islands and they encounter the creature…the Cyclops.
The beast captures the ship and the heroes figure out he’s being controlled by aliens. These A-Chiltarins have decoded the mental patterns of the sailors they captured and determined the Earth is easy pickings for conquest. Good thing Ant-Man and the Wasp showed up. They figure out the alien plans and when the Cyclops is headed to kill off the sailors, Henry works out a method of taking control of the creature and he instead frees the seamen.
With their robot controlled by humans, the A-Chiltarins realize the Earth is not a good target for conquest and they head home, and with their vacation over, so do the Wasp and Ant-Man.
What did I learn:
- The Wasp can communicate with wasps.
My Thoughts:
This was a pretty good issue and I enjoyed the idea that our heroes were taking on a creature from mythology. While they didn’t really fight the Cyclops though, it was cool to see him in the issue.
I also liked the fact that Jan seemed to really be holding her own as a hero. She went on her own to enlist the wasps to help out and really worked hard to save the sailors. Sure, Ant-Man figured out how to control the Cyclops but Jan flew right into danger trying to save people.
The only issue I have is that once again aliens are behind things. So many of these early Marvel issues deal with Aliens or Commies. I hope we start seeing more variety in the villains. Other than that though, I enjoyed the issue.
My Rating: B
