Watching Television the First Week of June 2018
Being sick had its drawbacks this week. I didn’t play many games. I didn’t read many comics. I didn’t listen to many audiobooks. You’d think I spent more time vegging in front of the television and sure I did watch a bit but I was too out of it to watch much of anything seriously. So my list this week is a bit sparse.
Favorites from the Week ending June 9th, 2018
I think I’m gonna start indicating the week by the week number rather than the ending date, at least for the title of the post. I figure that will be a bit easier to understand and it really doesn’t matter too much since some of the stuff I watch is stored on my TiVo from previous weeks or even from a streaming service. In any case, as I mentioned this week didn’t include much new stuff and actually had a bunch of repeats to simply relax my mind as I was sick. Old Impractical Jokers, X-Files, and Gone With The Wind don’t make it onto my list even though they would easily fall into my favorite list.
- Westworld season 2 episode 7 – Les Écorchés. A bunch of things went on in this issue and we see what might be the end of a couple of main characters. Is Westworld going the way of Game of Thrones and killing off a bunch of people (who everyone thinks are critical to the story) in the middle of the season? Is the fact that Ford sat there and basically spewed forth tons of secrets a sign that the writers are trying to resolve all the questions they’ve been asking for the first season and a half? Do all these revelations even provide the answers everyone is looking for? And I gotta ask…is the Man in Black really alive after all those bullets? He certainly took enough hits that I’d question if he could survive – or is HE a host? That would be a huge twist! I think this is also the first episode where we see a single host character with multiple body variations since we see something like 5 or 6 Bernards. So much happens this episode and I didn’t even mention that Maeve finally found her daughter. This was definitely a good and revealing episode and it felt like the season is racing towards a climax and since there’s only 3 episodes left that makes sense.
- Alone season 5 episode 0 – Making the Cut. This was the setup for the new season where we got introduced to the returning survivalists who are gonna compete this season in Mongolia. I’ve realły enjoyed the previous seasons as they’ve shown what it takes to make it in the wild all by yourself for so long. Most of these people have the skills needed to survive but most are gonna tap out because they miss home or their dog or their kids or their wife. It fun trying to figure out who’s gonna leave first or make it the longest. And I’m glad they went back to the solo survival since the show is called Alone after all.
- FLCL: Progressive season 1 episode 1 – Re: Start. If you didn’t watch the original FLCL years ago here’s your chance to get just as confused as everyone else. Fooly Cooly was a fun and crazy anime about a 12 year old who has a alien girl living with him and a robot that grows outta his head. It was a pretty bizarre but interesting and fun show to watch. FLCL: Progressive, I think is the sequel to that series and I can’t wait to see what craziness they throw at viewers this time. As it is, this is a show I have to watch multiple times to figure out, just like the first series. For now, just think about fighting giant irons and robots and using headphones to drown out the world.
- My Hero Academia season 1 episode 4 – Start Line. I’ve heard good things about this as a manga so I figured if they’re gonna put it out as an anime I should take a look. Too bad I missed the first few episodes since I enjoyed this one. The basics of this episode revolve around a contest that will provide for admission into a super powered school which I think is called Hero Academia. Izuku is our main protagonist and he somehow finds himself without any bad guys to fight in the contest as everyone else is scoring points by defeating them…that is until a giant robot appears. Izuku uses his One For All ability for the first time and defeats the robot but learns that this huge bad guy provided Zero points. He’s distraught that he didn’t score anything during the whole test and is sure he won’t be admitted into the school. Fortunately, the test also gave out points for saving others during the test which he did by destroying the giant robot. There’s a bunch for me to learn about this anime and it’s world but I enjoyed the episode.
- Better Late Than Never season 2 episode 5 – Barcelona – If Terry’s Not Naked, Who Is?. Ok, this is just a funny little show I pop on every once in a while to see where in the world these four guys are. Terry Bradshaw, Henry Winkler, George Foreman, and William Shatner travel around the world getting into crazy mischief…its mind numbing and something I can just watch without thinking, so I like it (particularly when I’m sick). The crew heads to Barcelona and Terry drops his shorts while paragliding, Winkler poses as a nude model for the rest to try their sculpting abilities, and they all nearly barf when served bull testicles for dinner. I don’t mind admitting to enjoying this because I enjoy the 4 of these guys.
As I said, I didn’t watch a whole bunch of things and for the most part kept the shows I did watch pretty mellow. It helped that many shows are ending their season (Killing Eve and The Terror) or even their series (The Americans) but there’s still a bunch of good TV out there to watch…I’m sure I’ll find more this week.
