Ended at Six
Sadly the Angels winning streak ended at six with a 7–5 loss to the Twins. Sunday the offense added first baseman Jose Fernandez into the Pujols, Kinsler mix but it was not enough to overcome the 5 runs Tropeano gave up.
Too Many Runs to Overcome
While the first 2 games of the series were much more pitching battles, this one featuring Nick Tropeano (3–3 4.35 ERA) against rookie Fernando Romero (2–2 3.96 ERA) was kinda a free for all. Romero outdueled Tropeano and even though his bullpen tried to give the Angels a chance in the 9th, they held firm.
Nick’s been pitching well but he’s gotta push it up a notch to fit in with the rest of the starters these days. With the loss, the Angels win streak is over at 6 but hopefully they can start back up today, particularly against the Mariners who are leading the AL West.
The offense did their job in scoring 5 runs which should be enough but wasn’t. Kinsler continued his good hitting going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Pujols did the same, going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI which pushed him past Stan Musial on the all time RBI list. But as I mentioned earlier, Jose Fernandez helped out today. He went 2 for 3 with a run, an RBI (his 1st…only 1951 to catch Albert) and 2 doubles.
With that kinda output from a rookie and the fact that Albert and Ian have been my Player of the Game so much recently, I give my award today to Fernandez and hope to see more from him.
Today the Angels send Andrew Heaney (3–4 3.12 ERA) to the mound against Seattle’s Wade LeBlanc (1–0 2.94 ERA) in the first of a 3 game series at Safeco Field.
