Trout takes the HR Lead
While the Angels drop the series opener to Detroit, Mike Trout takes the HR lead all by himself. With his 18th home run of the year, Mike Trout pushes past Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez to take sole possession of first place on the home run chart for MLB. After a weekend of struggles in New York it looks like things are continuing in a similar fashion in Detroit.
Sadly the Angels Drop the Opener
But Mike Trout’s league leading 18th home run was pretty much the only highlight for the Angels yesterday. Andrelton Simmons was his usual consistent 2 for 3 self and as things have gone recently, the rest of the offense didn’t do much. I wonder how much of that was because of the umpiring.
There certainly seemed to be a bit of inconsistency betweèn the pitches called for Detroit and those called for the Angels. So much that the Angels catcher, Maldonado, argued a questionable third strike and got thrown outta the game. Shortly after Scioscia was thrown out for giving home plate umpire Mark Ripprger a piece of his mind. I have no problems calling strike on the edges of the strike zone but if you’re gonna do it for one team, you gotta do it for both.
With the inconsistencies in pitch calling and the lack of offense the Angels were unable to overcome Tyler Skaggs troubles and fell 9 to 3. Mike trout gets my Player of the Game for his 18th home run it the team needs to get some guys on base for him to knock in.
Today, the series with the Tigers continues with Tropeano (2–3 3.86 ERA) against Fulmer (2–3 4.08 ERA)
