A Series Won and Another Started
Daily Ramble 216: A Series Won and Another Started
Today I started reading Spider-Gwen and it took me a bit to get going on this one. At first I was a bit confused that things were so different from what I’ve seen in recent titles but then I realized we were dealing with a different Earth…Same people in different circumstances. With my mindset corrected I started to figure things out and enjoy the issue.
Along with the start of Spider-Gwen, I’m also happy to report that while my Angels didn’t get the sweep of Houston they were hoping for, they took the series 2–1 and finished half a game outta first place. If this is indicative, the battle for the AL West is gonna be intense this year.
Lost the Game, Won the Series
The Angels finished up their 3 game series and come away from Houston half a game behind the first place Astros. I’d say the series was definitely a positive sign for the team, particularly when they had lost 5 of six at home just before heading to Texas.
In the Wednesday game Justin Verlander was dominant for 6 innings. The Angles finally got to him in the 7th but by then, Houston was already leading 4–0. The Astros ended up taking the game 5–2 and the only things that made the game respectable were a home run by Pujols and a run scoring double by Cozart.
The home run was hit #2994 for Pujols and sets him up to nab his 3000th hit in front of the home crowd as the Angels head back home for a 6 game home stand. In the game, the knock got the Angels on the board and Pujols deserves my Player of the Game. Too bad the rest of the team didn’t turn things around as well and take the broom to the Astros.
Next up, the Yankees on Friday at Anaheim.
First Look at Spider-Gwen #1
Greater Power, Part One by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez. Published by Marvel Comics, 2015.
I actually had to read this one twice before I really figured out what was going on. For some reason, the first read was a bit confusing for me but things clicked the second time around.
The thing is, this takes place on Earth–65 and I’ve never read anything that dealt with the multiple Marvel Universes but now that I know that, I’m cool with it. Basically, Gwen Stacy is bitten by a radioactive spider in this world and Peter Parker is actually The Lizard and he’s dead. And he died in Gwen’s arms. Anyway, Gwen becomes Spider-Woman and she gets an assist from Janet Van Dyne – The Wasp – to trick out her web shooters and such.
With that origin and background outta the way, Gwen is working on figuring out who attacked her new boss and all indications are it was the dead Parker or some other man sized lizard. At the same time Captain Stacy, Gwen’s dad, is dealing with office politics as the police have him searching for Spider-Woman, aka the killer of Peter Parker, while he knows his daughter didn’t do the deed.
Once I figured out that things were happening on a different world than the one I’ve become used to, I started enjoying the issue. With familiar characters taking on different roles it puts a nice twist on things and it turned into something I think I’ll keep reading for a while.
With the second reading and cool art, I’ll rate this issue a B and look forward to continuing it.
