#2018MMM Urban Jungle Preview

Daily Ramble 172: #2018MMM Urban Jungle Preview

Today was a pretty hectic day and I was only able to take a look at the 2018MMM Urban Jungle bracket. I had planned on watching some more Westworld or commenting on the book I’ve been reading – Ready Player One – which is really good BTW, but I am too tired and outta time. The Urban Jungle division looks pretty good though and has many animals you can actually see without going to a zoo or looking in a museum. I’ve actually seen Coyotes, Raccoons, Squirrels, Opossums, Skunks, and Rats in my neighborhood so these guys are familiar. From the looks of things though, I do think the Harar Hyena might be tough to beat in this bracket. He’s adaptive and can be vicious so I’d look out for him.

The Urban Jungle division holds many animals that you can see nextdoor. These guys hang out in or near our cities and some are even helpful to people. Raccoons, Coyotes, Bobcats, these all have no problem living side by side with people and this adaptation helps them to thrive. But as with most of the contests in the tournament, the ecosystem where the battle takes place can effect the outcomes in dramatic ways. These mammals, though, have shown the ability to adjust on the fly in many cases, whether it’s learning to open trash cans or dodging cars. With that in mind it’ll be interesting to see which one reigns supreme.

Here are my initial picks and while I am still working on my overall bracketI think these gut feelings will probably stick in my final picks…

  • Harar Hyena (winner) vs. Belo Horizonte Marmoset
  • Bristol Fox vs. Raccoon (winner)
  • Moscow Dog (winner)vs. Sewer Rat
  • Coyote (winner) vs. Opossum
  • Bobcat vs. Striped Skunk (winner)
  • Berlin Boar (winner) vs. E. Grey Squirrel
  • Porcupine (winner) vs. Dheli Rhesus
  • Cape Town Baboon (winner) vs. Common Hedgehog

My big question for this round is the Bobcat vs. Striped Skunk. This will be a close battle and I feel it could turn on a nose…literally. By all rights, the Bobcat is the stronger competitor but if the Skunk gets in a spray it’s all over. And the last time a Skunk (it was Spotted) was in the tournament, it made it to the second round and I feel it should have gone further. While she got in a good spray against the bear she was fighting, she gave up on the fight…this Striped Skunk will hopefully do better. If the Bobcat does get past the Skunk I could see it making it all the way to the final four because they can be fierce.
