First Look Review for New Avengers #24
First Look Review for New Avengers #24: AvX!
This issue is an intersting change of pace for the Avengers vs. X-Men saga. It steps back and gets personal with a couple of the players and unfortunately since I don’t know much about these characters it kinda lost it’s effect on me. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have been in the forefront of Marvel’s Netflix stories but I haven’t gotten the opportunity to watch them yet so I don’t know much about these two. They’re the focus of this issue and the fact that they have a child is kinda important to their future with the Avengers.
New Avengers #24
AvX! by Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deodato, and Will Conrad. Published by Marvel Comics, 2012.
When I last saw the New Avengers, they showed up to help the Avengers take down Norman Osborn in Avengers #24 but now they’re hanging out on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier that appeared above Utopia in Avengers vs. X-Men #1 and they see Cyclops blast Captain America…the fight is on!
Actually, this issue is more about the lead up to the start of the fight as it focuses on the personal lives of the New Avengers. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are married and she just had a child. Being a mother has brought a bunch of changes to Jessica’s life and it’s caused some turmoil between her and Luke – primarily over how they’re gonna live their lives. When bad guys can threaten to hurt your child, there’s a lot of things to consider and Jessica isn’t sure she wants to be a part of the Avengers any further. It’s just too dangerous for a child.
Captain America calls everyone in for a briefing on the Phoenix Force, letting the teams know that this is a world crisis. Things are about to get real as we have the Phoenix headed to Earth and reliable sources indicate that Cyclops and the mutants on Utopia aren’t likely to respond well to the Avengers trying to take Hope into “protective custody”.
Getting Personal
With such an Earth shattering event about to take place, Jessica makes up her mind and takes her child away from the fighting, away from the Avengers, and away from her husband. I wonder if this is gonna have an impact on the fighting since Luke can’t possibly have his head in the game when his wife and child just left him.
Not having much of a relationship with Jessica or Luke, I really didn’t feel too invested in this issue. Unlike a lot of people, I haven’t watched any of the 3 Netflix shows featuring these 2 characters so I’m not even sure about their powers or relationships with the other characters. This issue didn’t do anything to change that but rather expected the reader knew things already. That’s fine for an avid New Avengers reader, but for a noob like myself, I was a bit lost.
You can find first looks at other issues in the Avengers vs. X-Men saga linked in my January Reading List.
I rate this issue a C.
