Fighting Barbarians and Hiding from Thugs

Daily Ramble 135: Fighting Barbarians and Hiding from Thugs

Today I ramble on a bit about both Final Fantasy XIV and Civilization VI. In Civ, I keep having issues with Barbarians. I am trying to work my way up in the game with religion and by creating new cities but is seems each step I take gets hindered by the fact that Barbarians are all over me. I really need to stop these guys. In FFXIV, I finished off my fishing leveling for the time being and turned to the Rogue class. I’m really enjoying how easy it is to move between classes in the game and I want to make sure to get all the classes in Limsa leveled up a bit before I move on. After finishing fishing, I went to the Thieves Guild and started up with the Rogue class. I’m having fun in both games so I’m gonna keep working at them as I have time.

A Stealthy Rogue

In my latest gaming session, I was able to finish off my level 10 fishing quest and moved on to a new combat class.

I could have gone back to Arcanist but I wanted to give the Rogue a chance. These guys use daggers as their main weapon and of course they focus on stealth. The various quests had me running out to the islands where I got to engage in combat again. The main thing I found about combat classes is that to level them quickly it’s a good idea to find out what’s in the hunting log for that class. I had done that for Arcanist and it helped level me up and now with Rogue, it allowed me to move quickly through the levels. Once I got stealth the quests also asked me to hide from thugs.

This was pretty much mandatory since if they attacked, I’d be quickly overwhelmed, there were so many of them. But I made it past the various bad guys and stole what I needed for the quests. I also fought where I needed to. Antoher thing I had to worry more about as a rogue was to stay healthy. As an Arcanist I was able to heal myself but as Rogue I took more damage than I wanted to. I’ll have to keep more of an eye on how combat is flowing when I’m playing a class I can’t heal with.

Spain 109–120

Last go round I established Cordoba and worked on expanding my empire and I kept moving in that direction. Soon after I started up this session, I built another settler so I was working on having a settler ready to go at all times for the next few turns. I really wanted to expand my city numbers in hopes that would help deal with the Barbarian problem – I don’t think they can spawn inside a city radius. Unfortunately, I lost one of my galleys to, of course, a Barbarian ship. I’m pretty sure these hordes are more dangerous in Civ VI than I remember in Civ V. I always recall them being a pain, but something I could easily overcome unless I played with the Raging option. In this game it seems even the normal Barbarians are raging and it’s a bit frustrating. They just keep coming and coming.

Fortunately I still had one galley and it was exploring nicely for me. I finally found Egypt’s capital city and then I ran across the Galapagos Islands. That might be something to try to incorporate into my empire but it’s pretty far away. Another frustration is I haven’t found any new continents yet. Could this whole map be one continent? I hope not since I get bonuses for establishing trade and colonies on other continents. On top of this frustration, Egypt had me blocked from exploring beyond the Galapagos since they planted a city on a peninsula that my Galley could not get around and still remain close enough to land to move…argh!

While I was exploring I neglected my religious growth and ran into a bit of an issue. The Arabian religion of Islam sent missionaries to my new city and they converted the city to that religion. Hmm…if I’m gonna go for a religious victory I need to get a handle on how to play the holy game. I’m gonna have to do some research on this since Arabia seems to be out maneuvering me. On top of that, Taoism, which was founded by the unmet player, is currently the dominant religion. He’s got 4 cities with 23 citizens worshiping his religion. Wow, I am really behind in this game. Barbarians be damned!!!
