Comics to Read in January 2018
Daily Ramble 115: Comics to Read in January 2018
At the start of 2017 I set out a goal to read through 250 comics during the year and I made a real good run of it. I actually read through over 340 issues and I feel I’ve learned quite a bit about many of the characters I’ve known for so long. Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Wolverine, I feel I have a much better idea of these guys now and I enjoyed the process of reading their exploits…so much so that I’m gonna set even higher goals for 2018, but that’s for another post. This post is my plan for comic reading in January 2018.
Since I read through over 300 comics last year, I also started to categorize my reading and I’ve decided I want to make sure I read more than just stories from the big 2. So I’m looking at old stories and new ones, at DC and Marvel, and others. My main categories are gonna be Marvel 1963 (until I get through the 86 or so issues there), Modern Marvel (which focuses on Marvel Now! for now), and DC Rebirth (which is fairly current in the DC universe). I’m also looking at starting to step through Star Wars continuity which has quite a few comics in it. In all, I’m looking to try to read through about 60 issues in January which would be more than any month in 2017 but I think I can do it, particularly since I have a plan. In any case, here’s that plan…
Marvel 1963
After finishing reading through 1962 during 2017, I’m hoping to make some good progress on my read through of the Complete Marvel Reading Order in 2018 and to do so, I’m gonna read at least 10 issues this month.
- Tales of Suspense #40
- Journey into Mystery #92
- Fantastic Four #14
- Tales to Astonish #43
- Tales of Suspense #41
- Journey into Mystery #93
- Amazing Spider-Man #3
- Strange Tales #109
- Tales to Astonish #44
- Tales of Suspense #42
Modern Marvel
In my modern Marvel reading, I’m still marching through the Marvel Now! “event” and am beginning to get into the Avengers vs X-Men story line and I’m looking forward to it. This promises to have a bunch of hero on hero fights that could be real fun.
- Avengers #24
- Avengers #24.1
- Avengers vs X-Men #0
- Avengers vs X-Men #1
- Uncanny X-Men #10
- Wolverine and the X-Men #9
- New Avengers #24
- Avengers #25
- Avengers vs X-Men #2
- Avengers vs X-Men: Verses #1
DC Rebirth
For the month of January, I’m gonna keep up with reading DC Rebirth since I’ve enjoyed the story so far. I’m only planning on getting through 10 issues but I think that should keep me moving forward in the universe and I’ve got a bunch of other comics I want to take a look at.
- Titans Rebirth
- Justice League (New 52) #51
- Justice League (New 52) #52
- Superman Rebirth
- Action Comics #957
- Action Comics #958
- Action Comics #959
- Action Comics #960
- Action Comics #961
- Action Comics #962
Letter 44 vol 2: Redshift
With political intrigue, alien invaders, brave astronauts, and a baby, I’m looking forward to continuing this series. My understanding is that issue #7 is a one-shot that provides some back story on some of the astronauts, but that 8–13 cover the next arc so I’m gonna read through all 7 to keep up to speed with this title.
- Letter 44 #7
- Letter 44 #8
- Letter 44 #9
- Letter 44 #10
- Letter 44 #11
- Letter 44 #12
- Letter 44 #13
JLA 1997 vol 1
I’ve read through most of the first volume of Grant Morisson and Howard Porter’s run on JLA and wanted to finish it off in the new year. There are only 2 issues left to read but #9 completes the story arc with The Key and the Secret Files and Origins story seems to give a bit of information about Superman’s different costume, which I have been wondering about for a while.
- JLA #9
- JLA Secret Files and Origins
Vision Vol 1: Little Worse Than A Man
I read through this graphic novel a while ago but I’m getting ready to start up volume 2 so I figured it would be time to put together some thoughts about the issues. This title from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta was pretty good in 2015–2016, so much so that it won the Eisner for Best Limited Series. With that in mind, I’m gonna read the rest of volume 1 in preparation to finishing off the second volumes next month.
Star Wars: Yoda’s Secret War
With everything Star Wars going on this month, I have been looking at the current state of Star Wars cannon. There’s a really cool site that keeps track of things that I’ve been following and it’s got a timeline of the current novels, comics, animation, and movies that are considered part of the universe since Disney bought out Lucas and drew a line in the sand. My goal is to catch up and learn about the Star Wars universe and I figure the best way to do that is to start from the beginning. This means starting before The Phantom Menace movie and actually in the middle of the current Star Wars comics series. The Yoda’s Secret War story arc occurs in a flashback to a time before Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn met up with Anakin and focuses on Master Yoda. I think I’ll start here with the comics and march forward with any media that might be in the continuity.
- Star Wars #26
- Star Wars #27
- Star Wars #28
- Star Wars #29
- Star Wars #30
4 Kids Walk into a Bank
I don’t know much about this title but I’ve heard some good things and since my book club is taking a look at it, I figure I can at least give it a first look. The idea seems to be about child criminals and apparently the dark comedy by Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss picked up a 9.2 critics rating on Comicbook Round Up so I figure it’s pretty good.
- 4 Kids Walk into a Bank #1
- 4 Kids Walk into a Bank #2
- 4 Kids Walk into a Bank #3
- 4 Kids Walk into a Bank #4
- 4 Kids Walk into a Bank #5
Bone Vol 1: Out From Boneville
I actually read this volume in 2016 and referenced it in my favorite graphic novels read in 2016 and I wanted to finally move forward in the series to the next volume. It’s been over a year so I figured I should refresh my memory of the issues and I could put together some first looks so I can keep track of what went on. This was fun in 2016 and I expect it’ll be good the second time around too.
- Bone #1
- Bone #2
- Bone #3
- Bone #4
- Bone #5
- Bone #6
As I get through the various issues I plan on keeping this page up to date and linking to the first looks as I talk about the comics.
