Ohtani and Oh Marvel!

Daily Ramble 103: Ohtani and Oh Marvel!

The Angels just managed to pick up one of the most anticipated new players in baseball in Shohei Ohtani and I am so excited he chose my team. A player that actually has a chance to play both ways is truly unique in MLB today and there hasn’t bee one for quite a long time. My excitement for this makes up for my frustration that I feel for having read the wrong Point One issue for my Modern Marvel reading. Yeah, I picked the Marvel NOW! Point One that came out in 2012 rather than the Point One issue that came out in 2011. Can’t Marvel get better names for thier one shot comics? In any case, I’m gonna head back and read the correct issue and got back to my reading list from there.

Shohei Ohtani

I’m just gonna put this little tidbit out there for today since I am totally excited for the MLB season to start for the first time in few years. Sure, my team has had the best player in the majors for the past few years so they’re always exciting to watch. Next year though, they’re gonna have another unique player…Shohei Ohtani. If things work as they’re planned, he will be the first successful two-way player in decades – probably since Babe Ruth.

This 23 year old Japanese player is coming to America and he chose to play for my team. I am so psyched for this. I might even see about heading out to Spring Training this year to see if I can catch a glimpse of him. I’m sure tickets are gonna be selling like hot cakes for games he’s pitching – from what I’ve heard, he can throw up to 102 mph.

I remeber seeing Aroldis Chapman pitch against the Padres and he was hitting 101 on the radar – it’s truly impressive to see someone throw that fast. Even for an inning in relief. Ohtani is a starter who can throw that fast. I can imagine 9 innings of that kind of excitement. In any case, I hope he brings over some training and strengthening dedication so he stays healthy – that’s one problem the Angels keep having the past few season, they look great on paper but then everyone gets injured and the team performs poorly.

Screwed up my Reading Order

I’ve been reading though a few different reading order and for the most part, I think I’m getting things read properly. I did run into a fproblem though with my modern Marvel reading. I was going through the lead up to the Avengers vs. X-Men event using a combination of the Comic Book Herald reading list and the one found on Comic Book Reading Orders and things were working out well. I had/have tons of comics to read in these orders but I had to start somewhere.

As I was looking back at these resources to fill out the next 10 or so comics I was gonna read, I saw something that made me sad. Somehow, I read the wrong comic. Sure, it’s not the end of the world, but it is kinda screwy.

Instead of reading Marvel NOW! Point One from 2012 that I read and reviewed, I was supposed to read Point One from 2011. No wonder I was a bit confused how the stories fit with one another. The main problem I had stemmed from Cable’s involvement in the Avengers X-Sanction limited series where he’s attacking the Avengers. When I read the Marvel NOW! Point One issue, he was somewhere in the future doing time traveling stuff with Forge. I chalked it up to parallel story lines going in different comic titles, but it was confusing. Now I found out that it was because I had screwed up the reading order.

Oh well, I’m glad I caught it now and not down the road. This way, I can read through the new issue and see how it fits into the continuity and not have this mixed up confusion that didn’t need to be there. The 2 comics are only about a year apart, but obviously a bunch of stuff happens during those 12 months.

With this correction, my next 10 issues for Modern Marvel reading are gonna be:

  • Marvel Point One #1
  • Avengers Academy #26
  • Avengers #24
  • Avengers @24.1
  • Avengers vs X-Men #0
  • Avengers vs X-Men #1
  • Uncanny X-Men #10
  • Wolverine and the X-Men #9
  • New Avengers #24
  • Avengers #25

I’m hoping to get through these by the end of December.
